Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Richard Madden’s Ikaris anchor the story’s central romance, while Dane Whitman, played by Kit Harington, is an important human character, not one of the ten Eternals.
What is Eternals about?
Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows immortal heroes who have lived on Earth across thousands of years. They reunite when the Deviants return and threaten humanity. Disney describes a story that moves between two time periods and spans 7,000 years within the film’s fictional timeline. The movie was directed by Chloé Zhao, with screenplay credits for Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo; it was inspired by Jack Kirby’s Eternals comics, first published in 1976. Disney’s film listing gives a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 2 hours 37 minutes; D23 lists 157 minutes.
Who are the ten Eternals, and who plays them?
D23’s character guide identifies ten principal Eternals. Their powers help distinguish them, but the group’s loyalties, relationships, and disagreements about whether to intervene in human affairs are just as important as what each can do.
| Character and actor | Defining ability | Personality, humanity, or team connection |
|---|---|---|
| Sersi — Gemma Chan | Transmutes non-sentient matter she touches. | Empathetic and drawn to humanity, she works as a Natural History Museum curator in present-day London. Her long relationship with Ikaris and connection with Dane Whitman ground the ensemble in the present. |
| Ikaris — Richard Madden | Flies, possesses great strength, and projects cosmic energy from his eyes. | A charismatic tactician who helps reunite the team. His sense of duty and love for Sersi pull him in competing directions. |
| Ajak — Salma Hayek | Heals Eternals, animals, and humans; communicates telepathically with the Celestials. | The team’s spiritual leader and maternal figure, she is the only Eternal able to communicate telepathically with the Celestials. |
| Kingo — Kumail Nanjiani | Fires cosmic-energy blasts from his hands. | Confident and at home in the modern world, he has become a Bollywood star. His longtime valet, videographer, and friend Karun accompanies him. |
| Thena — Angelina Jolie | Creates weapons from cosmic energy. | A formidable warrior whose accumulated memories can overwhelm her. She shares a close bond with Gilgamesh, who protects her. |
| Gilgamesh — Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) | The physically strongest Eternal, with a cosmic-energy-enhanced exoskeleton. | Kind as well as powerful, he becomes Thena’s close protector and partner. |
| Makkari — Lauren Ridloff | The fastest woman in the universe. | A deaf Eternal who collects artifacts and mementos, she has become a reader and keeper of human civilizations. The team signs to communicate with her. |
| Phastos — Brian Tyree Henry | A technopath who understands and combines technologies. | A brilliant inventor who has helped advance humanity and controls the Eternals’ starship, the Domo. |
| Sprite — Lia McHugh | Creates lifelike illusions and can make herself or others invisible. | Though centuries old, Sprite looks like a child. Being treated as one fuels her frustration, wit, and desire to be seen as an adult. |
| Druig — Barry Keoghan | Controls minds using cosmic energy. | Intense and withdrawn, he resents humanity’s divisions and the Eternals’ prohibition against intervening, making him a dissenting voice in the group. |
How are the Eternals connected?
Sersi and Ikaris: the central relationship
Sersi and Ikaris are the emotional center of the ensemble. Producer Nate Moore described their romance as the film’s spine, a relationship that has endured changes over thousands of years. Their opposing pulls—Sersi’s affinity for humanity and Ikaris’s sense of duty—make their connection part of the story’s larger conflict.
