Krampus (2015) is the strongest starting point if you want a Krampus-centered Christmas horror film. This ranking weighs watchability, how much Krampus matters to the story, and folklore fidelity separately: an entertaining film is not necessarily a faithful one. The ten numbered films below are the selections in Grave Noise’s critic-authored ranking, not a verified worldwide filmography; Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale appears separately because its horned Christmas creature is folklore-adjacent, not explicitly named Krampus.
How this ranking works
The order follows Grave Noise’s critic-authored watchability ranking, not a consensus score or objective measure. Its writer places Krampus (2015) first and A Christmas Horror Story second, then orders the other eight films below them. To help distinguish preference from folklore, each entry also notes how central the creature is and whether the film draws on Krampus tradition or another figure.
Krampus is an Alpine folkloric figure, especially associated with Austria and southern Germany, commonly depicted with goat-like and demonic features. Film adaptations often change the tradition. Rosie Knight’s 2020 Den of Geek list counts eleven films in its own selection and assesses their closeness to folklore; that count is not a definitive total of every film ever made.

Krampus (2015)
Best for: A polished, Krampus-centered studio film. In Universal’s synopsis, Max loses his Christmas spirit and brings the creature to his family’s home. Director Michael Dougherty’s film balances horror and comedy; Grave Noise ranks it first and praises its performances, effects, costumes, and tone. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not measured comparisons.

Folklore fit: It is a strong cinematic use of Krampus, but Den of Geek notes that the film changes the creature’s motivation. Universal lists the film at 98 minutes and rated PG-13 in the United States; Legendary gives its original release date as December 4, 2015. Universal Pictures’ film page and Legendary Pictures’ film page provide the studio details.
-
A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
Best for: Viewers who want several Christmas-horror stories rather than one sustained monster plot. This anthology weaves together different strands; Krampus appears in one, culminating in a confrontation with Santa. Grave Noise ranks it second, while Den of Geek discusses the film’s visual interpretation of the creature.
Folklore fit: It draws on Krampus, but the character is one strand in a broader anthology, not the sole subject.
-
Krampus Unleashed (2016)
Best for: A low-budget creature feature with a treasure-hunt setup. Prospectors seeking Eric Klaus’s treasure free a creature, pulling a family into the events. Grave Noise ranks it third.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Folklore fit: Den of Geek notes that the magical-rock device and the plot’s setup depart from the familiar Christmas-night punisher premise. Krampus is a substantial part of the story, but this is a loose reinvention rather than a close retelling.
-
Mother Krampus 2: Slay Ride (2018)
Best for: A Christmas slasher for viewers browsing broadly by title. Grave Noise places it fourth but describes its connection to Mother Krampus as loose.
Folklore fit: The title overstates the connection: Den of Geek says the film is not about Krampus. It is included here because a broad search for Krampus movies can lead readers to it, not because it is a meaningful Krampus adaptation.
-
Krampus: The Return (2022)
Best for: A later title in Grave Noise’s selection. Its synopsis follows friends investigating a brother’s death and uncovering a Krampus connection; the critic places it fifth.

Folklore fit: The available synopsis establishes the connection as part of the story, but does not establish a close adaptation of the tradition. Release-year metadata differs among sources and territories, so 2022 here is the year used in Grave Noise’s ranking, not a claim about every edition’s release date.
-
Krampus Origins (2018)
Best for: Viewers interested in an origin-style setup involving a summoning box and an orphanage. Grave Noise places it sixth.
Folklore fit: Den of Geek argues that Krampus barely appears and that the plot’s Nazi-era mechanism strays sharply from traditional lore. The title promises a more direct encounter than the story appears to deliver.
-
Krampus: The Reckoning (2015)
Best for: A supernatural horror premise built around a child and a doll or summoning mechanism. Grave Noise ranks it below Krampus Origins.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Folklore fit: Though it opens with a folklore explanation, Den of Geek says the film turns Krampus into an instrument of revenge. The creature is present, but the adaptation shifts away from the traditional punisher role.
-
Mother Krampus (2017)
Best for: A related Christmas-horror story, rather than a straightforward Krampus film. Grave Noise ranks it eighth.
Folklore fit: Den of Geek identifies Frau Perchta, a different figure in Alpine folklore, as the film’s source; Grave Noise likewise describes it through that legend. Its title can make it sound like a direct Krampus adaptation, but the underlying folkloric association is different.
-
Krampus 2: The Devil Returns (2016)
Best for: Viewers following the sequel to Krampus: The Christmas Devil. The plot concerns police searching for missing children, and Grave Noise ranks it ninth.

-
Krampus: The Christmas Devil (2013)
Best for: A low-budget yuletide-demon story in which a police officer confronts the threat. Grave Noise ranks it tenth.
Folklore fit: Den of Geek notes that this version makes Krampus the brother of St. Nicholas, rather than following the usual folkloric relationship. It is an early entry among the titles in this critic’s ranking, but not a close guide to the tradition.
A folklore-adjacent bonus: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
Rare Exports is worth seeking out if you want an unsettling horned Christmas figure, but it is not explicitly a Krampus movie: Den of Geek notes that the film does not call its creature Krampus, instead drawing on the northern European Joulupukki tradition. Knight considers it the closest to Krampus’s origins among the films in her list. That is one critic’s folklore assessment, not proof that the film is an adaptation of Krampus. A scholarly article also names it among Krampus-related screen examples.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which film is closest to Krampus folklore?
For the closest folklore connection among the titles discussed by Den of Geek, Knight points to Rare Exports, with an important qualification: its creature is not named Krampus. If you want a film that actually centers on Krampus, start with Krampus (2015), while recognizing that it changes the creature’s motivation. These are two different recommendations because folklore proximity and movie preference are separate questions.
When judging another adaptation, look for more than horns and a frightening Christmas setting. The relevant questions include whether Krampus is tied to St. Nicholas, whether the story uses the tradition of punishing naughty children, and whether the film is actually adapting Krampus rather than a neighboring figure such as Frau Perchta.
