The Ballad of Buster Scruggs ends six different ways because it is an anthology, not one continuous plot: a singing cowboy dies, a robber faces the gallows again, a performer disappears from view, a prospector reclaims his gold, a journey ends in tragedy, and a stagecoach reaches an uncanny destination. Taken together, the endings make chance and death recurring forces—but the Coen brothers have not supplied a definitive key to every symbol.
What connects the six endings?
Netflix describes the film as a six-part Western anthology, and its screenplay presents the chapters as stories in an illustrated book. The format matters: Joel Coen said the stories were written as shorts over many years, while Ethan Coen said they seem to relate to one another retrospectively. They are distinct tales, not episodes of a single ongoing narrative.
A useful connection is the unstable boundary between control and chance. Characters make plans, but a quicker gun, an untimely encounter, a bad assumption, or an audience’s shifting taste can change their fates. Cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel described death and absurdity as recurring Coen themes; that supports a broad reading of the film, not a definitive explanation for every plot detail. The interpretations below are readings of the scenes, not confirmed statements of authorial intent.
1. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”: the singing cowboy meets his match
What happens
Buster enters as an immaculate singing cowboy whose songs and gun skill make him seem untouchable. In the final confrontation, a younger gunman draws faster and kills him. The scene then shifts to a heavenly musical number, with Buster still performing his familiar entertainer persona.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the ending suggests
The abrupt move from a gunfight to a musical afterlife turns death into the chapter’s final joke. It also completes the parody of the singing-cowboy Western: Buster’s performance continues, even after his apparent invincibility ends. The film does not explain the scene as a literal account of what happens after death.
2. “Near Algodones”: luck buys time, not control
What happens
A bank robber’s plans repeatedly fail, leaving him captured and facing execution. He escapes an earlier hanging when cavalry intervenes, but is caught again and returned to the scaffold. At the end, he faces another impending hanging, with no assurance that a rescue will come.

What the ending suggests
The robber’s reprieves are temporary, not proof that he can outwit the consequences indefinitely. Each reversal depends on timing and circumstance rather than a dependable escape plan. The chapter makes survival look contingent: luck can interrupt danger without giving anyone lasting control over it.
3. “Meal Ticket”: the performer is replaced, but his fate is withheld
What happens
The impresario’s audiences dwindle. His performer, an armless and legless man who recites literature and speeches, attracts less attention than before. The impresario buys a chicken that seems able to “calculate” and tests whether crowds will pay to watch it. The ending shows him continuing with the chicken; it does not show what happens to the performer.

Why the chicken matters
The replacement can be read as a bleak portrait of entertainment that follows attention and revenue rather than loyalty to the person doing the work. The chicken is a novelty that draws a crowd; the performer has lost that appeal. But the film leaves his fate undisclosed, so it would go beyond what the ending shows to claim exactly what becomes of him or to treat the chicken as an officially decoded symbol.
4. “All Gold Canyon”: a hard-won claim, defended by force
What happens
A prospector finds gold in the canyon, only to be attacked by a claim-jumper who had been hiding nearby. He survives the attack, drives the other man away, and returns to the gold. The chapter ends with him and the recovered treasure in the canyon.

What the ending suggests
The prospector’s patience and knowledge of the landscape help him find the gold, but keeping it requires surviving violence. The ending is a qualified victory: he recovers what he sought, yet the discovery is inseparable from a struggle over possession.

5. “The Gal Who Got Rattled”: a fatal mistake in an open landscape
What happens
Alice’s brother dies during their westward journey. She grows close to Billy Knapp, who proposes marriage. After an attack on the wagon train, Alice becomes separated from the group and sees a rider pursuing her. Believing the danger hopeless—and having been warned that capture could mean death—she kills herself. Billy returns too late and identifies the rider as a friendly scout. The wagon party moves on without the future Alice and Billy had imagined.
What the ending suggests
The tragedy turns on a mistaken judgment made under pressure: Alice sees a threat, but the approaching rider is help. The film does not reveal that the route was safe; it shows that help arrived too late to change her decision. The open frontier offers space to travel, but not certainty about what is coming or whether anyone will reach you in time.
6. “The Mortal Remains”: a destination that stays unexplained
What happens
Five passengers ride in a stagecoach while a dead man is carried on its roof. They discuss how people understand one another and what may happen after death. At the end, the coach reaches a hotel-like destination. The passengers carrying the dead man go inside, while the driver stays outside.
Does the stagecoach represent death?
It can be read that way. The chapter’s title, its conversation about death, and the passengers’ arrival at an uncanny destination all invite a passage-to-death interpretation. But the film gives no literal reveal that establishes whether the passengers are dead, supernatural, or simply caught in a strange episode. Delbonnel also noted that this final chapter takes place almost entirely inside the stagecoach, without the expansive landscape seen elsewhere. Its confinement makes the ending feel different from the frontier journeys that precede it, without resolving its mystery.
How the endings differ
The endings can be compared by what happens to the characters, how much chance shapes the outcome, and how plainly the story resolves events. The first five chapters end in concrete actions or consequences; the last leaves room for a supernatural reading.
