Spoilers for Season 4, Episode 18, “Audit.” Ava is fired as Abbott’s principal after taking responsibility for the school’s bribe arrangement, but the ending is not a sign that Janelle James is leaving the series. It leaves Abbott with an open principal role and makes Ava’s motives more complicated than simple self-sacrifice.
Why does the district audit Abbott?
In “Audit,” the district investigates after receiving a tip that Abbott has accepted bribes connected to a local golf-course developer. The arrangement began because the developer had used non-union workers. In exchange for not reporting that, the school and teachers received goods and resources.
When the audit arrives, staff try to hide the computers and other supplies. Their cover-up falls apart when the developer’s lawyer shows up and calls the new delivery “fresh bribes.” The district representatives warn that teachers involved could be suspended.
Why is Ava fired?
Ava accepts responsibility for the arrangement, shielding the teachers from the threatened consequences. The district fires her as principal. As the episode’s recap explains, principals are not protected from dismissal in the same way as teachers, so taking the blame costs Ava her job.

Before leaving with her belongings, Ava hears Barbara admit that she once thought Ava was too selfish to care about the students, but now sees that judgment was wrong. Ava tells Barbara she asked her to take on music because she hoped doing something Barbara loved would reinvigorate her.

The exchange gives Ava’s decision an emotional dimension: she has been paying attention to Barbara and the school community, even if she rarely expresses that concern plainly. It is not a complete transformation into a selfless person. Co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker said Ava expected to get a week’s vacation in Cabo when she offered herself as a martyr, a reminder that her generosity still comes with Ava-style self-interest.
Does Ava’s firing mean Janelle James is leaving?
No. The episode fires Ava from her job at Abbott; it does not show Janelle James leaving the series. In a March 19, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Schumacker said, “The story is not over — You will see Janelle in subsequent episodes.” He described the next episode as addressing the immediate change to Abbott’s ecosystem, with the consequences playing out over a longer period rather than resolving quickly.

According to Schumacker, the idea emerged late while the team was breaking the episode. He said Quinta Brunson proposed, “What if we fire Ava?” The writers decided the turn fit the story. That account frames the ending as a deliberate consequence of the bribe plot, not evidence that James was departing the show.
