Apple TV has been linked to two early-stage screen adaptations from Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere: Mistborn as a feature-film project and The Stormlight Archive as a television series. As of October 8, 2026, Sanderson had completed a first draft of the Mistborn screenplay, while work on the Stormlight adaptation had not started. Neither project has a confirmed production greenlight or release date.
Which Cosmere books are part of the reported deal?
Coverage of the January 28, 2026 announcement named Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. It did not establish that Apple acquired adaptation rights to every book in Sanderson’s Cosmere universe, and the deal’s terms have not been publicly detailed in the cited reports. TheWrap’s announcement identified Blue Marble Pictures as attached to produce. Sanderson’s official film and TV news page also links to the announcement and describes the same two projects.

The formats and development stages are different: a screenplay draft exists for Mistborn, but the reported television project remained earlier in the process.
How far along is the Mistborn movie?
Sanderson announced on his official page that the first draft was done, while stressing that it was “just an early step in a very long process.” The August 2026 Tribune report quoted him describing his work as writing screenplays and helping maintain continuity. A completed draft is a meaningful development milestone, but it is not confirmation that a film will be made.

Why a rights deal or script does not mean a release is coming soon
Screen adaptations move through stages: rights or options, scripting and revisions, attachments such as directors or showrunners, studio development, greenlight, production, and release. Sanderson’s 2024 explanation of the adaptation process notes that stages can take substantial time and that a project may change or stop before greenlight. The current reports establish a rights-related announcement and development activity, not a greenlit production, filming start, cast, or premiere date.
What is known about the Stormlight series?
As of the August 16, 2026 Tribune report, Sanderson had not started the adaptation and was looking for a showrunner. That is an earlier stage than the Mistborn screenplay draft. The available reporting does not establish a release date or production schedule for the series.

The two named screen projects come from separate Cosmere series. Readers interested in Mistborn can begin with Mistborn: The Final Empire; readers drawn to The Stormlight Archive can start with The Way of Kings. These are book-series entry points, not prerequisites for watching an adaptation.

Sanderson’s 2018 State of the Sanderson described an earlier arrangement with DMG Entertainment and development efforts involving The Emperor’s Soul, Mistborn, and The Way of Kings. That account is historical context; it does not establish the terms of the later Apple-associated deal.
