Aaron Eckhart plays Steve Vail, a former CIA agent nicknamed “The Bricklayer.” Nina Dobrev plays CIA agent Kate, and Clifton Collins Jr. plays Radek, the former agency asset at the center of their investigation. Here’s who the principal cast play in the 2023 espionage thriller.

Who’s in the cast of The Bricklayer?

Actor Character Who the character is
Aaron Eckhart Steve Vail, “The Bricklayer” A former CIA agent who now works as a bricklayer and is called back to investigate the journalist killings.
Nina Dobrev Kate, also credited as Kate Bannon A CIA agent who investigates the case with Vail.
Clifton Collins Jr. Radek, also credited as Victor Radek A former CIA asset and the principal suspect in the investigation.
Tim Blake Nelson O’Malley, credited as CIA Director O’Malley The CIA director.
Ilfenesh Hadera Tye, also credited as Tye Delson The CIA station chief in Thessaloniki.
Oliver Trevena Patricio Vail’s friend.
Akis Sakellariou Kostas, also credited as Kostas Leontaris Greece’s deputy minister of foreign affairs.
Ori Pfeffer Sten, credited in the expanded listing as Denis Stefanopoulos A former CIA informant in Netflix’s synopsis.

Netflix’s cast guide uses shorter names for several characters, while expanded credits list fuller forms for Kate, Radek, Tye, Kostas and Sten. The table includes both where the names differ. Netflix’s guide is the source for the character descriptions; the expanded spellings are supplementary credit information from IMDb’s full cast listing.

What is The Bricklayer about?

When German journalist Greta Becker is found dead in Greece, a series of journalist killings has turned public suspicion toward the CIA. The agency brings Vail back to investigate. He and Kate pursue Radek, a former CIA asset suspected of the killings, as the case develops into an alleged attempt to blackmail the agency. The synopsis presents Radek as a suspect; it does not establish that he is responsible.

The story moves between Philadelphia and Thessaloniki, Greece. Tye is the CIA station chief in Thessaloniki, while Kostas is Greece’s deputy minister of foreign affairs. Netflix describes the film as an action thriller; its distributor classifies it as action, espionage and thriller. Netflix Tudum published its guide on April 12, 2024, and Metropolitan Films lists the film in its catalog.

Is The Bricklayer based on a book?

Yes. The film adapts Noah Boyd’s 2010 novel, written by former FBI agent Paul Lindsay under that pen name. One notable adaptation change is Vail’s agency: he works for the FBI in the novels, while the film portrays him as a former CIA agent. Netflix Tudum’s film guide notes the difference.
