Why Captain Butler’s memories matter to the case
Butler’s dementia shapes both the mystery and its solution: his memories do not reliably place him in the present, and his belief that it is 1979 makes Sparrow seem alive to him. The team must distinguish the parts of his past that are true from what his condition makes him misunderstand. His old identity makes him look like the threat, but his false information and the evidence against Conrad reverse that assumption.
