Spoilers for the ending and credits scene: Moana 2 has a mid-credits scene. Matangi is still under Nalo’s control, Nalo signals that he has more plans for her, and Tamatoa appears with a grievance against Moana and Maui. The scene teases continuing conflict; it does not confirm that a third film has been announced.
What happens before the credits?
Moana reaches Motufetū and breaks the curse that has hidden the island and severed connections among voyaging peoples. Maui raises the island. Moana dies during the climax, but her ancestors restore her as a demigod. She returns home, and the story ends with her crew setting out toward the horizon.
That hopeful ending is important to the credits scene: the tag comes after the heroes’ celebratory resolution, rather than replacing it.
What happens in the mid-credits scene?
Matangi is still bound to Nalo
The scene returns to Matangi, who first seemed to be an antagonist but ultimately helped Moana. She demands to be released from Nalo’s control. He refuses and indicates that she still has a role in his plans. TheWrap describes the scene as the first time Nalo is physically shown, rather than represented by the storm. Tamatoa has a grievance too
Tamatoa appears as he tries to restore the collection on his shell. He also signals that Moana and Maui have made an enemy of him. Together, the appearances suggest that the heroes may face more than one opponent, and that their adversaries could align around revenge. The scene does not explain how that might happen or show the next confrontation.
Why does the scene come after the ending?
Co-director David Derrick Jr. told TheWrap that the filmmakers wanted Moana and her crew to have the film’s final euphoric moment, then let the credits roll before returning to the villains. Co-director Jason Hand said the filmmakers wanted “to make sure that we had the ability to tell more stories.” That points to sequel-minded storytelling, but it is not confirmation of a particular next film.
Does it set up Moana 3?
The scene leaves room for another story: Matangi remains under Nalo’s control, and Tamatoa has reason to oppose Moana and Maui. But a tease is not an announcement. TheWrap reported in November 2024 that Disney had not formally announced another sequel at that time. Is it a post-credits scene?
More precisely, it is a mid-credits scene, as TheWrap describes it—not a tag that requires waiting until every credit has finished. “Post-credits scene” is often used casually for any scene during or after the credits, but “mid-credits” identifies this sequence more accurately.
