Spoilers ahead. At the end of Kung Fu Panda 4, Po accepts the role of Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace and chooses Zhen to succeed him as Dragon Warrior. The film closes with the Furious Five helping train her: the succession is decided, but Zhen’s training has only begun.
Why Po has to choose a successor
Po’s next challenge is not simply defeating another enemy. DreamWorks’ official synopsis describes a paired transition: Po is tapped to become the Valley of Peace’s Spiritual Leader, but first he must find and train a new Dragon Warrior. The title he has carried as the valley’s champion is changing, and he is reluctant to leave it behind.
The crisis is tied to the Chameleon, a shapeshifting sorceress who wants Po’s Staff of Wisdom. With it, she can summon kung fu masters from the Spirit Realm and take their abilities. Po teams up with Zhen, a quick-witted corsac fox thief, whose skills prove important to the journey. Universal’s synopsis also frames the story around Po finding a successor while confronting a magic-wielding enemy.
What happens at the end of Kung Fu Panda 4?
The following sequence is a plot recap; it is based on Popverse’s ending guide, rather than a studio-published scene-by-scene account.
#1 Best Overall
- Zhen betrays Po. Caught in the Chameleon’s trap, Po entrusts the Staff of Wisdom to Zhen so he can escape. Zhen gives it to the Chameleon, having been working with her.
- The Chameleon summons past masters. She uses the staff to open the Spirit Realm and bring kung fu figures into the fight so she can take their abilities. Po is knocked from a high parapet, but his fathers, Mr. Ping and Li Shan, rescue him.
- Po confronts his own reluctance. He recognizes that clinging to the Dragon Warrior title has clouded his judgment. He returns to face the Chameleon, while Zhen turns against her former ally and helps Po reach her.
- Po and Zhen defeat the Chameleon. Zhen unlocks her kung fu potential during the fight. After their victory, Tai Lung acknowledges that Po was a worthy choice for Dragon Warrior before the spirits depart with the Chameleon.
- Po names Zhen as his successor. Po returns to Shifu, accepts the Spiritual Leader position and reveals that Zhen will take his place as Dragon Warrior. The Furious Five help train her in the closing scene.
What Po’s new title means
Dragon Warrior and Spiritual Leader represent different responsibilities in the film’s transition. Po has been the active champion who meets danger through kung fu; as Spiritual Leader, he is stepping toward a position of guidance. His decision to accept the change does not mean he stops contributing. Instead, the ending presents him moving from holding the role himself to helping someone else grow into it.
That makes the succession part of Po’s character resolution, not just a new appointment. His attachment to the title has made it harder for him to judge Zhen clearly. By recognizing that problem and choosing her, he accepts that leadership can mean passing on responsibility rather than keeping the familiar identity.
Why Zhen is the next Dragon Warrior
Zhen begins as a thief and an uneasy ally, and her betrayal makes Po’s trust in her a real test. Her reversal and emerging kung fu ability give Po grounds to choose her, while the final training scene turns that choice into a direction for her future. Zhen is a corsac fox voiced by Awkwafina, according to DreamWorks’ cast and creator information.
The ending establishes Zhen as Po’s chosen successor, not as a fully formed master. The Furious Five’s help signals that her development is starting; the film does not say how fast she will learn or whether she will master the role. The Five have a limited presence through much of the adventure, as The Associated Press noted in its review, making their appearance as her trainers a closing handoff as well as a practical next step.

Does the ending confirm a sequel?
No sequel plans are established by the ending or by the cited official synopses. The story leaves Zhen at the beginning of her training, which creates room for her development, but that is not confirmation of a follow-up film. What the ending does settle is the immediate succession: Po takes on the Spiritual Leader role and names Zhen as Dragon Warrior.
