On August 25, 2025, SCAD announced Lopez as a recipient of its 2025 Virtuoso Award, citing both her performance in the film and her broader career. Christina Routhier, SCAD Savannah Film Festival’s senior executive director, called the performance “a revelation.” That is SCAD’s stated assessment and festival recognition, not an Academy judgment or a critics’ consensus.

The 2025 film adapts the Broadway musical, rather than directly presenting itself as a new version of only the original novel. The story’s lineage begins with Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel, which has also been adapted for stage and screen. Héctor Babenco’s 1985 film starred William Hurt and Raúl Juliá; Hurt won an Oscar for his performance.
These versions are related but not interchangeable: the novel, stage musical and films are different adaptations, and the 2025 movie draws on the musical. Readers interested in the story’s origins can turn to Puig’s novel as further reading; it is not the film’s screenplay.
