Who was Ilse Koch?
Ilse Koch was the wife of Karl Otto Koch, Buchenwald’s first commandant. After the camp’s liberation, American investigators documented crimes, collected witness accounts, and secured records from the SS camp administration. Buchenwald Memorial says that investigative work helped form the basis for postwar proceedings against Buchenwald personnel held in Dachau, where Koch was a defendant in the main Buchenwald trial.
The distinction between the crimes documented at Buchenwald and allegations about Koch’s individual conduct matters. Evidence that crimes occurred at the camp is not, by itself, evidence that Koch personally ordered or carried out every act later attributed to her.
What does the evidence say about the human-skin claims?
Buchenwald Memorial reports that investigators seized three pieces of tattooed human skin at the camp. The remains were identified as human in May 1945 and introduced as evidence at the 1947 Buchenwald trial. This establishes that human remains were present and used as evidence; it does not by itself establish that Koch selected prisoners or ordered household objects made from their skin.

Tomaz Jardim’s study, Ilse Koch on Trial: Making the “Bitch of Buchenwald”, is described by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) shop as examining the case and the public meaning attached to it. The shop’s description characterizes the most sensational accusations against Koch as apocryphal or unproven and notes how her sexualized public image could obscure the broader bureaucratic violence of the Nazi state. Those claims should not be collapsed into a single story in which camp evidence automatically proves Koch’s personal responsibility for each sensational allegation.
What is established about the trials?
Buchenwald Memorial describes American teams documenting crime-scene evidence, gathering witness accounts, preparing wanted lists, and securing three tons of SS administrative records after liberation. It says this work provided a basis for trials against Buchenwald personnel in Dachau. USHMM explains that prosecutors relied on German documents and testimony, and that the published proceedings remain important historical sources.

Did Ed Gein know about Ilse Koch?
Esquire reports that there is no actual evidence Gein was inspired by Koch or the Nazis. Kino.de says Gein did not expressly discuss Koch or her crimes. It leaves open the possibility that he encountered U.S. reporting about her, while cautioning that the more specific theory that pulp magazines influenced him cannot be demonstrated.

That leaves two different propositions, neither of which should be overstated: Gein may have had access to coverage of Koch’s case, but the available accounts do not establish that he read it, remembered it, or drew ideas from it. They do not establish a meeting, communication, or direct influence.
How to assess portrayals of a Koch–Gein connection
- Separate records from retellings: trial evidence and memorial accounts document the historical record; later journalism and dramatizations may suggest connections without proving them.
- Distinguish evidence from attribution: evidence that human remains existed at Buchenwald does not alone prove that Koch committed a particular act involving them.
- Look for evidence of influence: a claim that Gein was inspired by Koch requires evidence of his exposure and a connection to his actions. The secondary accounts discussed here do not establish either.
