What is Inside Out about?
When Riley’s father takes a job in San Francisco, the family leaves her familiar Midwest life behind. The new home and school unsettle her routines, while the five emotions try to help her respond. The story moves between Riley’s outward adjustment and the imaginative world inside her mind.

- Disney and Pixar?s ?Inside Out 2? returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is disrupted by something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren?t sure how to feel when Anxiety and friends show up.
What are Headquarters and the other places inside Riley’s mind?
The film gives Riley’s inner life a playful geography. These are story-world ideas, not clinical descriptions of how a real brain works.
- Headquarters: The emotions’ control center, where they respond to Riley’s experiences.
- Imagination Land: A place for Riley’s daydreams and play. Director Pete Docter describes it as “where all of Riley’s flights of fancy and daydreams are built full-size and come to life,” in Pixar’s film guide.
- Islands of Personality: Parts of Riley’s inner world powered by core memories.
- Train of Thought: Carries thoughts and memories between parts of her mind.
- Dream Productions: Creates Riley’s dreams.
- Long Term Memory: Stores memories.

Why do the characters resonate with the film’s audience?
The emotions are not simply a lineup of comic personalities: together, they dramatize a difficult transition in Riley’s life. At a D23 cast-and-filmmakers Q&A, Bill Hader reflected on the film’s focus on change as children grow older: “I think what’s so great about this movie is that they chose to make a film about a time in your life that we all have to go through, you go from being young and then you start to go—you know, you’re an adolescent and things start to change and things start to get hard for you.”
Producer Jonas Rivera also discussed how the emotions’ shapes helped establish their identities. In the same D23 Q&A, Rivera said: “Albert Lozano, our character art director, came up with this great little simple drawing of each of them as a different shape: Joy was a star, and she was golden, illuminated, almost like a spark—like an explosion.”
