Spoilers for episodes 8 and 9. Lois’s dreams turn people from her real life into distorted versions of themselves: Megan becomes both a rival and a woman Lois recognizes as trapped by Justin, while Marshall, Redd, and Ed take on roles shaped by illness, caregiving, and recovery. Dr. Witticomb interprets Grotesquerie as a figure born from Lois’s trauma—but the episodes leave open whether she predicted the Burnside massacre and whether the motel ending is real or another dream.

Across the two episodes, Dr. Witticomb helps Lois consider how people and experiences from her waking life shaped the cast and images of her earlier dream world. These are interpretations of Lois’s character and memories, not a clinical explanation of coma dreams.
What do Lois’s coma dreams mean?
The dream roles remix Lois’s relationships rather than map neatly onto a single meaning. The episodes connect several images to the tensions and histories that occupy her life.

#1 Best Overall
Megan: rival, nun, and woman under Justin’s control
Lois sees Megan as a rival colleague, but also recognizes that Megan is trapped in an abusive relationship with Justin. In the words TVLine quotes from Lois, “Let me be clear, baby girl, you are being possessed.” The nun and possession imagery therefore sits alongside Lois’s professional suspicion: Megan can feel like a threat to Lois while also being someone Lois wants to warn. TVLine’s episode recap.
Marshall: the coma reversal and a damaged marriage
Dreaming of Marshall in a coma reverses their real-life positions and gives Lois a sense of control over a marriage she feels has crumbled. The recaps tie the loss of love between them to Marshall’s treatment of their daughter Merritt after Merritt gained weight in college. The dream image is bound up with that marital history, not just with illness. TVLine; Ready Steady Cut’s episode recap.
Rank #2
Redd and Ed: caregiving and sobriety
Redd appears as Marshall’s nurse, drawing on the care she provided when Marshall was ill. Lois respects that care even though Marshall is difficult to live with. Ed, meanwhile, appears as a caretaker because he was Lois’s AA sponsor in real life. Both roles borrow from relationships in which someone tended to another person, but they reflect distinct parts of Lois’s history. TVLine; Ready Steady Cut.
Charlie and Merritt: suspicion and family strain
Lois believed Charlie and Megan threatened her job and her life; the dream turns that suspicion into a more overt alliance between them. Merritt’s dream portrayal, by contrast, connects to Lois’s strained relationship with her daughter and the conflict around Merritt’s weight gain that affected Lois and Marshall’s marriage. TVLine identifies Maisie as a pro-life activist Lois encountered at a protest. In that context, the milk-machine imagery expresses Lois’s distress about women losing agency and being forced to reproduce; it is political anxiety rendered as grotesque dream imagery. TVLine.
What does Grotesquerie represent in Witticomb’s theory?
Witticomb reads Grotesquerie as a figure formed by Lois’s exposure to violent cases and her trauma—a symbol of the world as Lois now sees it. TVLine quotes his explanation: “Grotesquerie is the stand-in, the totem, for the way the world according to Lois Tryon now is.” That is the specialist’s in-story interpretation, not an objective diagnosis or a definitive key to every image. Did Lois predict the Burnside massacre?
The scene shows Lois being called to a crime scene that closely resembles the Burnside family massacre she dreamed, including a pot on the stove. One possibility is that someone used her therapy records to recreate the scene. Witticomb proposes the more unsettling alternative: Lois may have foreseen it, since the crime was not based on her earlier case files.
The episodes do not resolve which explanation is true. Prediction remains Witticomb’s theory, not a confirmed ability or established fact about Lois. TVLine; Ready Steady Cut.

Lois meets Megan at the motel that appeared in Lois’s earlier dream. Justin interrupts and attacks Megan, and Lois shoots him. The confrontation echoes the therapy session: Justin repeats a challenge and refers to a study discussed there. Those parallels are unsettling, but the episode coverage does not provide a definitive explanation for them. The ending does not prove that Lois is awake—or that she is still dreaming.
