How the final battle ends
The climax turns Godzilla and Kong’s earlier rivalry into a situational alliance. Mothra helps bring the Titans together against Skar King and Shimo, making the shared danger the reason for their cooperation. The payoff is not a new standing team so much as a coordinated response to a threat none of them can ignore alone.
Director Adam Wingard highlighted the visual impact of bringing the three Titans together at the Sphinx. In a Den of Geek interview, he described the image: “There’s a moment in the film where you’ve got Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra in front of the Sphinx.” That comment speaks to the scene’s intended spectacle; it does not promise a particular role for Mothra in a later film.

Kong returns to the Hollow Earth apes
Kong ends the immediate conflict among the Hollow Earth ape group. The resolution supports reading this as a place of belonging and a leadership role for him, but the ending does not lay out a formal monarchy or a detailed political structure.

Godzilla returns to the Colosseum
Godzilla goes back to his familiar resting place in the Colosseum. The Titans’ separate destinations restore a workable division of territory after their joint fight: Kong remains with the Hollow Earth apes, while Godzilla resumes his surface-world routine.
What Mothra’s return means
Mothra’s appearance brings another Titan into the alliance and makes the final group image possible. Wingard’s remarks support treating the scene as a meaningful creative and visual reunion, but they do not establish a sequel plan or guarantee that Mothra will be part of the next story.

What the ending sets up for the Monsterverse
Legendary’s official film page frames Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as part of the Monsterverse and says it follows the showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong. The Associated Press describes the wider continuity as beginning with Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017), and reports that Wingard chose to bring the Titans together after audiences responded to their collaboration against Mechagodzilla in the previous film.
The clearest forward-looking implication is a changed relationship: Godzilla and Kong have demonstrated that they can cooperate when circumstances call for it, even as they continue to occupy different domains. Mothra’s involvement shows that another Titan can join that alignment. The ending does not name a new villain, assign the pair a future mission, or confirm that they will reunite for every crisis.

Wingard described the films’ monster-centered approach to the Associated Press: “These movies can hold up with the Titans, the monsters, as the point of view.” The quote appears in an AP report published March 21, 2024, and describes the creative perspective behind the films; it is not evidence of a specific future plot.
