The tiara most often described as Kate Middleton’s favorite is Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, a diamond-and-pearl royal jewel she has worn at formal events since 2015. The “$135 million” figure in the headline is not established: the sources available do not provide an appraisal of the tiara at that amount.
Which tiara is called Kate Middleton’s favorite?
It is Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, also known in some coverage as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot. Vogue has described it as one of Catherine, Princess of Wales’s favorites and has called it her most frequently worn tiara. That is a press characterization based on her public appearances, not a documented statement by Catherine that it is her personal favorite. Vogue’s retrospective traces her appearances in it through 2019; its March 18, 2026 report describes her wearing it at a Nigerian state banquet at Windsor Castle.
Why is it associated with Queen Mary?
According to Vogue, Queen Mary commissioned the tiara from Garrard in 1913. Its design was modeled on the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which belonged to Queen Mary’s grandmother. The piece combines diamonds with 19 hanging pearls, set in silver and gold. Its name and design connect it to a family history that predates Catherine’s use by generations.
How did the tiara pass from Queen Mary to Catherine?
Vogue’s account says the tiara passed from Queen Mary to Queen Elizabeth II, who lent it to her daughter-in-law, Princess Diana. After Diana and Charles divorced, it was returned to the Queen. Catherine’s first public appearance wearing it was at the December 2015 Diplomatic Reception. She has worn it repeatedly at formal occasions since then, including the state banquet reported by Vogue in 2026.

Was it Kate’s wedding tiara?
No. Catherine wore the Cartier Halo Tiara for her 2011 wedding to Prince William. It is a different piece, with a scroll motif and diamonds in two cuts. Vogue reports that the Halo has 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds, and that the then Duke of York bought it in November 1936 for his wife. The Lover’s Knot, by contrast, was commissioned for Queen Mary in 1913 and is distinguished by its hanging pearls. Vogue’s history of the Cartier Halo covers its design and provenance.

Is the Lover’s Knot worth $135 million?
That value is not substantiated by the sources cited here. They contain no published appraisal of the Lover’s Knot at $135 million. The Royal Collection Trust explains that the Royal Collection is held in trust for the Sovereign’s successors and the nation, but its institutional description does not assign a value to this tiara. The Trust’s collection information is not a valuation record.

A PBS documentary, Secrets of the Royal Jewels, includes jewelry expert Susie saying, “There’s no way you can put a price on these things.” The transcript’s informal comparative estimates concern other tiaras, including Kate’s wedding tiara; they do not appraise the Lover’s Knot. They cannot substantiate the $135 million claim. The PBS transcript presents the remarks in their broader discussion of royal jewelry.

Calling the Lover’s Knot a favorite is a convenient way to describe Catherine’s repeated choice of it for high-profile occasions. It should not be mistaken for a direct quote from her or for proof of a private preference. Nor does the tiara’s royal history establish a market price: the sources support its commission, design, and successive wearers, but not a specific monetary valuation.
