Spoilers for “Estranger Things.” The Season 36 finale depicts Marge’s death in an imagined future, but it does not establish that she is permanently dead in The Simpsons’ ongoing continuity. Executive producer Matt Selman described the show’s future episodes as speculative and said Marge is dead only in this one future episode.
What happens to Marge in “Estranger Things”?
The Season 36 finale, “Estranger Things,” aired May 18, 2025. It jumps ahead to a future in which adult Bart and Lisa have drifted apart after outgrowing their shared interest in Itchy & Scratchy. Following Marge’s death in that future, Lisa finds a recording in which Marge asks the siblings to look after one another. The message helps Bart and Lisa reconnect, and the episode depicts Marge watching over her family from the afterlife. Variety and The Guardian describe the episode and its family story.
Does the episode make Marge permanently dead?
No. The death happens within a future-set story, and Selman said those futures are speculative rather than binding forecasts of the show’s baseline. In an interview with Variety, he said, “Obviously since the ‘The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time.” He also said, “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”
That distinction does not undo what viewers see: the episode shows Marge dead in its imagined future and gives the event emotional weight. It means the scene is not presented as a permanent change to the family’s ongoing status quo. Selman put the series’ loose approach to continuity bluntly in the same interview: “‘The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!”

Why did the story feel so shocking?
The episode places a major character’s death in the future of a long-running family comedy, inviting the question of whether the show had finally changed its status quo. But the emotional focus is not a permanent exit from the series: it is Marge’s concern for her children and the reconciliation of Bart and Lisa after years of estrangement. The Guardian describes the show’s future-set stories as alternate versions, not one connected timeline.
So “Marge dies in the finale” is accurate only with the qualification that it happens in the finale’s imagined future. Stated without that context, it can misleadingly sound like the show has made her death part of its regular present-day continuity.

How does that fit with The Simpsons’ reset format?
In a February 2026 interview with TheWrap, Selman described the usual format this way: “The show isn’t supposed to change. The characters reset every week. It’s like Groundhog Day but they don’t know it — and they don’t die that much.” That general reset helps explain why a future episode need not dictate the characters’ next present-day story, but it does not mean every death in the series is erased. Selman acknowledged exceptions, including Maude Flanders; TVLine also notes that recurring characters have died in episodes set in the present day.

No. TheWrap reported that the show reached its 800th episode with Season 37, Episode 14, “Irrational Treasure,” in February 2026. In that interview, Selman said the series had already parodied a finale and described his view of a possible ending: “If the show ever did end, there’s no finale, it would just be a regular episode that has the family in it.” That is his stated approach, not an announcement of an end date or a guarantee about future programming.
