To Catch a Predator made Chris Hansen a familiar face by turning undercover reporting into a repeatable television event: online decoys arranged meetings, Hansen confronted men on camera, and police sometimes made arrests. The format drew large audiences, but it also raised lasting questions about deception, the show’s coordination with a private watchdog group and law enforcement, and the role television played in creating the events it covered. The 2006 death of Texas prosecutor Louis William “Bill” Conradt Jr. became the defining controversy. The series ended in 2007 and NBC retired the franchise in 2008, amid several pressures rather than one conclusively established cause. Hansen continued working in television and online investigations.
How did To Catch a Predator become a hit?
The series began in 2004 as recurring investigations for Dateline NBC. Online decoys associated with the civilian group Perverted Justice posed as minors in chat conversations and arranged meetings. Actors played the teenagers at camera-equipped locations, where Hansen confronted the men. In operations involving police, officers waited nearby and arrested suspects. The format gave each segment a recognizable sequence: an online exchange, an on-camera confrontation and, in some cases, an arrest.
That structure also made Hansen central to the program. He was not simply narrating an investigation; he appeared at the moment of confrontation, asking questions as hidden cameras recorded the encounter. The format blended a serious subject with a dramatic reveal and an apparent resolution.
What the audience figures show
Published audience estimates indicate substantial reach, but they refer to different periods and measures and should not be treated as a single ratings trend:

These figures support the picture of a widely watched program, but the sources describe different points in its run and use different formulations. They do not establish a consistent year-by-year audience trajectory.
Why was the show’s method controversial?
The same elements that made the segments compelling also drew criticism. Decoys used deception to arrange meetings, and critics questioned whether that could amount to entrapment. The program worked closely with Perverted Justice and, in some operations, local police. That raised questions about the boundaries between a news organization documenting events and a production helping shape them.

Undercover Reporting, hosted by the Library of Congress and published by the University of Chicago Press, discusses criticism of NBC’s payments to Perverted Justice and concerns about the program’s “air of entrapment.” Critics also challenged the spectacle of the confrontation-and-arrest format. Hansen defended the show’s public-safety purpose, telling TIME that he believed it raised awareness and exposed people preying on children. That is his defense of the program, not an independent finding about its methods or effects.
What happened in the Conradt case?
In November 2006, Louis William “Bill” Conradt Jr., an assistant district attorney in Texas, died by suicide as police entered his home while a Dateline crew waited outside. He had been a target of the sting but had not gone to the decoy house. The circumstances made the operation a focal point for questions about how the show and law enforcement coordinated their actions.

Conradt’s sister, Patricia, sued NBC. ABC News reported that NBC settled the case in June 2008 for an undisclosed amount; the parties described the resolution as amicable. A settlement is not a court finding of fault or an admission of liability, and the reported settlement amount was not disclosed.
Why did To Catch a Predator end?
The chronology is clear, but the evidence does not establish one definitive cause. The final installment aired in December 2007, and NBC retired the franchise in early 2008. The Conradt case and legal scrutiny formed part of the wider context, while reporting also pointed to advertiser unease and the possibility that the format had become overexposed.

Hansen offered a different emphasis: he said the program had run its course and, as quoted by TIME, “At the end of the day, we had proved our point.” A former NBC executive cited by TIME viewed the concept as overexposed. The Washington Post’s 2026 account likewise describes legal pressure and advertiser concern while attributing differing explanations to Hansen and others. Taken together, those accounts support a multi-factor explanation—not a confident claim that the Conradt case alone caused the cancellation.

Hansen remained with Dateline after To Catch a Predator ended. NBC did not renew his contract, and he left the network in 2013. His later work included the Investigation Discovery program Killer Instinct, syndicated investigations and web projects, followed by more online predator investigations.

In an August 2026 account, the Los Angeles Times described Hansen as continuing that work and being active on TruBlu, YouTube and social platforms. Those platform references are a dated snapshot of his activity, not a guarantee that his projects or accounts remain unchanged.
Why has the story returned to public attention?
The subject has been revisited in David Osit’s documentary Predators and A24’s dramatized film Primetime. The Los Angeles Times reported that Primetime draws on Luke Dittrich’s 2007 Esquire article about the Conradt case, and that Hansen objected to the film’s use of his name and likeness. The Associated Press describes the film as a fictionalized portrait, not a documentary biography.
That distinction matters: a dramatized scene or line of dialogue is not evidence of what happened during the original operation or of NBC’s reasons for ending the franchise. The available accounts do not establish the film’s current availability or release formats.
