In a January 2026 interview, Marcus “Buff” Bagwell said he has been sober since August 27, 2022, and hopes to try wrestling again—but he has not announced a completed comeback match.
How Marcus Bagwell became Buff
Bagwell’s best-known wrestling identity took shape in World Championship Wrestling. After working in WCW from the early 1990s and appearing in tag teams, he joined the New World Order in November 1996 and adopted the “Buff” persona. The character—known for flexing, self-promotion and direct camera address—made him one of the faction’s recognizable performers. He also teamed with Scott Norton as Vicious and Delicious. A career summary provides this broad chronology; it is a tertiary source, so it is not a basis here for detailed title counts or match dates.
What changed after WCW’s sale?
When WCW was sold in 2001, Bagwell appeared on WWE’s Raw in a match against Booker T. Looking back in a 2018 interview, he offered his own interpretation of the match’s reception and his subsequent release. That account is useful as Bagwell’s perspective, but it does not establish WWE’s decision-making. CBS Chicago’s interview also records comments he made at the time about retirement plans; those remarks do not establish his current status.
How injury and addiction entered Bagwell’s story
In a January 2026 interview with Chris Van Vliet, Bagwell said a neck injury in 1998 led him to use prescription pain medication. He described repeated attempts at rehabilitation and said his sobriety date is August 27, 2022. “I got sober,” he told Van Vliet. These are Bagwell’s first-person recollections, not an independently verified medical history. The 2020 wreck and its medical aftermath
Bagwell said he crashed a car in 2020 while under the influence of pills and alcohol, severely damaging his right kneecap. He estimated that he underwent 40 or 41 surgeries over the following years and described recurring infections. According to his account, doctors made another attempt to save the leg but gave it a low chance of success; he ultimately chose amputation. The surgery estimate and account of medical advice are Bagwell’s recollections from the interview, not independently verified clinical records.
Is Buff Bagwell returning to wrestling?
Bagwell said he believes he could wrestle another match or two, but only if he can perform to a standard he accepts. “I know I could wrestle again, another match or two, but if I can’t do it, I’m not going to do it,” he told Van Vliet. He described getting in the ring and testing his movement as a goal. That is a hope, not a confirmed booking or evidence that a return match has taken place.
