How to read the records

Tendulkar’s ODI retirement was announced in December 2012, but his international career continued through his 200th Test in 2013. The distinction explains why the first ODI double century and his final international match fall in different years. ICC report on his ODI retirement

World Cup runs are a tournament measure, not another way of stating his overall international totals. Across 45 World Cup matches, the ICC’s 2013 retrospective records 2,278 runs at an average of 56.95, along with six centuries, 15 half-centuries and nine player-of-the-match awards. In his retirement statement, Tendulkar described the India dream he had lived for 24 years: “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years.” ICC-published retirement statement
