Kesha did not stop making music. The “sad reason” her career seemed to recede from view was a prolonged legal and recording-contract dispute with producer Lukasz Gottwald, known as Dr. Luke. It constrained and overshadowed a period of her career, but the allegations were contested, the case settled before trial, and Kesha has continued releasing music and promoting live dates.
What happened between Kesha and Dr. Luke?
Kesha signed an exclusive recording agreement with Gottwald’s company in 2005, when she was 18. The New York Court of Appeals’ account says the agreement gave the company rights to her first six albums. In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit in California alleging sexual abuse and seeking relief from the contract. Gottwald filed a defamation action in New York based on related claims. The dispute became a defining public story around Kesha, pulling attention toward her legal fight and away from the music itself. That helps explain why the period could feel like a disappearance even though it was not a complete halt to her career.
What did the settlement decide?
The New York defamation case settled in June 2023, before trial. The reported settlement terms were not made public. Did Kesha stop making music?
She released Gag Order in 2023
No. Kesha released Gag Order, her fifth album, in May 2023. Sony Music Canada announced the release on May 19. In that announcement, the label said Kesha had sold more than 14 million total album equivalents worldwide, had approximately 6.9 billion audio streams and 1.7 billion video streams worldwide, and had nine Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It also said she had four No. 1 singles at Top 40 radio. Those are promotional figures published by the label in 2023, not current totals or independently verified measures. She remains active
As of October 8, 2026, Kesha’s official website displays “NEW ALBUM . OUT NOW” and links to album shopping and dates and tickets. The accessible page text does not name the album or give its release date, so those details cannot be confirmed from that page alone.
