Her account captured a venue trying to draw customers beyond major sporting events—and a neighborhood divided over adult entertainment near a family-friendly cinema.
From Ballers sports bar to The Rec
PerthNow reported on June 29, 2023, that Ballers had reopened as The Rec after a revamp in May. The new offer included male and female “skimpies”—the locally used term for skimpy-clad entertainment—and adult-only shows for people aged 18 and over. PerthNow’s June 2023 report
General manager Troy Lowrey said Ballers could fill up for major sporting events but could not depend on those occasions every day. He described the business as “the victim of our own success” and said the change was intended to keep the venue alive more often and help revive the Collie Street precinct. Those were management’s reasons for the rebrand, not independently measured results.
Why the change divided local opinion
The response reflected competing ideas about what belongs in central Fremantle. PerthNow’s report described locals who welcomed the venue as a fit for an inclusive town, alongside people who questioned adult entertainment beside a cinema regarded as family-friendly. The disagreement was about neighborhood character as much as the bar itself: whether the new offer added to local nightlife or sat uneasily beside a nearby family destination.

What the July 2023 visit was like
In her July 8, 2023 account, journalist Gabrielle Becerra Mellet described visiting during “Filthy Thursdays.” She wrote of a dimly lit bar with pool tables, customers arriving after opening, and entertainers serving drinks. She said she felt warmly welcomed and would likely return with a group of girlfriends.
Those details describe one reporter’s visit in 2023, not a present-day inspection or a representative picture of the venue’s usual customers. Her account also noted that more than 10 patrons arrived after the doors opened; that was an observation from that visit, not a published attendance statistic.

Entertainers on boundaries, confidence and the work
The performers interviewed described the job as both rewarding and demanding. The Rec entertainer Kristy Quinn told PerthNow, “There’s people that try to push things,” referring to patrons who pressured entertainers for unpaid attention outside work. Her comment puts a practical boundary issue alongside the venue’s entertainment offer.
Kya Showgirl, who worked across waitressing, bartending and dancing and was contracted through entertainment agency Gold Class Girls, described the exposure involved in performing. “You’re very vulnerable in front of a large crowd, so it builds your confidence and your people skills really quickly,” she said. She also explained how she approached the energy of a crowd: “It’s about how you react to it and how you play with that energy.” These are her reflections on her own work, not a universal account of performers’ experiences.

Douglas Karunakaran, associated with dance company Amongst Men, told the reporter that men had approached the company wanting to learn to strip for parties or partners and to build body confidence. “Recently we’ve had a lot of men come through our academies, just wanting to learn how to get more confident in their bodies,” he said. His comment is an interview account, not an industry-wide statistic.

The 2023 reporting establishes what the venue offered at the time; it does not establish its current operating status. As of October 8, 2026, The Rec’s official website lists venues in Northam, Toodyay, Boulder, Waroona, Malaga and Capel, but not Fremantle. The omission does not confirm whether the former Fremantle site closed, changed name or has another operator. The website also cautions that hours, entertainment lineups, menus and specials can change without notice. The Rec’s current venue list The Rec’s website notice
