Rachel does not break the curse by finding Samara’s body. She survives because she copied the tape and showed the copy to Noah; when his seven days run out, Samara kills him. Rachel understands that passing the tape on—not solving its mystery—was the difference, and she helps Aidan make another copy. The ending offers no cure: it restarts the cycle.
What happens at the end of The Ring?
Rachel and Noah trace the tape’s images to Samara’s story and find her remains in the well. Rachel believes that recovering the body will finally let Samara rest. But after they return home, Aidan warns Rachel that helping Samara was a mistake: “Samara doesn’t sleep.”

Noah’s seven days expire. His television turns on, and the well image continues beyond the end of the tape. Samara crawls out of the screen and kills him. Rachel sees what happened and asks herself what she did differently. She realizes that she made a copy of the tape and showed it to Noah. Then she helps Aidan make another copy.
Why does Noah die if Rachel broke the curse?
Rachel did not break the curse. Finding Samara’s body solved part of the mystery of how she died, but it did not stop the tape’s threat. Noah still dies when his seven days are up.
#1 Best Overall
The film links Rachel’s survival to a different action: she copied the tape and showed that copy to Noah. The ending makes this the consequential difference between them. Rachel’s earlier belief that the tape’s images or apology pointed toward rescuing Samara proves mistaken; the film implies that the apparent plea was part of the trap, not a route to ending it. It does not lay out a complete set of supernatural rules.
Why does Rachel make a copy for Aidan?
Rachel helps Aidan copy the tape because she has concluded that showing it to someone else is how she survived. The final scene does not show who will watch that copy or what will happen to Aidan. It leaves the danger in motion: Rachel’s escape depends on transferring it to another person.
Rank #2
That makes the ending more than a last-minute twist. The copy turns survival into a moral choice. Rachel has learned how to keep herself alive, but doing so means passing the threat onward. The film ends with the cycle beginning again, not with a cure or a resolution for everyone involved.
What does the ending leave unresolved?
- Whether Aidan will survive is not answered in the film’s final scene.
- The identity of the next person to watch the copy is not revealed.
- The film does not establish every rule governing copies or prove that the curse can never be stopped.
These open questions belong to the 2002 film’s ending. Later installments may develop the story, but they are not answers supplied by this film’s final moments.

What does “The Ring” mean?
The title can point to several images and ideas rather than one confirmed explanation. DreamWorks production notes quote producer Walter Parkes suggesting three possibilities: the phone ringing after someone watches the tape, the ring of light in the well, and the circular storyline that returns the characters to the beginning. Those interpretations can coexist; the film does not declare one definitive meaning.
The tape’s images also function as clues in Rachel’s investigation. In the same production notes, director Gore Verbinski said the tape had to contain clues to its origin and to understanding why it was created. Rachel’s search makes the images legible, but understanding them does not make the danger disappear.

This is the ending of Gore Verbinski’s 2002 American film, starring Naomi Watts as Rachel, Martin Henderson as Noah, David Dorfman as Aidan, and Daveigh Chase as Samara. Amblin describes it as based on Koji Suzuki’s novel as well as Hideo Nakata’s 1998 Japanese film Ringu. This explanation concerns the 2002 film’s events and does not import rules or later developments from other versions.
