For Saturday, March 29, 2025, NYT Strands puzzle #391 has the theme “Power plants.” It’s a pun about plant-based foods, not electricity. Start with the progressive hints below if you want a nudge; the complete answer list follows a clear spoiler warning.

Hints for Strands #391

Try these in-game clue words before revealing the answers: each can help unlock a hint.

  • TINY
  • GEESE
  • HANGS
  • SPORTS
  • STAR
  • SNOT

If you want a more direct nudge, the theme entries begin with these letter pairs: TE, SE, YE, SE, NU, BE, and TO. The spangram begins VE.

Spangram hint

The spangram is 13 letters long. TechRadar reports that it touches the top edge at the third column and the bottom edge at the fourth column: TechRadar’s March 28 guide.

Answers for March 29, 2025

Spoilers ahead: the full answer list is below.

The spangram is VEGAN PROTEINS (often rendered without a space in the grid as VEGANPROTEINS). The seven other answers are:

  • NUTS
  • TOFU
  • SEITAN
  • TEMPEH
  • BEANS
  • SEEDS
  • YEAST

How the clues fit the theme

“Power plants” points to foods that provide protein in a plant-based diet. That connection brings together the short entries—NUTS, TOFU, BEANS, and SEEDS—with SEITAN, TEMPEH, and YEAST, while VEGAN PROTEINS names the overall idea.

How Strands hints work

Parade relays the NYT instructions: “Find theme words to fill the board.” Theme words fill the grid without overlapping, and the spangram describes the theme while connecting two opposite sides; it can contain two words. Finding three non-theme words earns an in-game hint, according to Parade’s March 29 guide.

For a publisher’s account of one solve, Tom’s Guide says its author found NUTS after using an in-game clue, then recognized the plant-based-food connection. Its reported placements put TEMPEH and SEITAN in the upper-left, YEAST in the lower-left, TOFU in the lower-right, and BEANS and SEEDS above it: Tom’s Guide’s account of game #391.
