Spoiler warning: The hints below start gently, but the answer section reveals all four groups for Connections #691, published May 2, 2025. This is an archive guide, not a claim about today’s puzzle.

Hints for Connections #691

Try each clue before moving to the next. The first points to a broad theme; the last gives away the word pattern.

  1. Think of things that can be sculpted.
  2. One group consists of words for a structural support.
  3. Look for popular items served from a grill.
  4. Each word in the final group comes immediately before the same four-letter word for the area between the head and body.

These clues follow the hint sequence published by Parade.

Why the groups fit

Kinds of carvings

A bust depicts a person’s head and upper torso; a relief is sculpted to project from a surface; a statue is a three-dimensional figure; and a torso is the body’s trunk, often represented in sculpture.

Pillar

Each word can describe something that holds or reinforces a structure: a brace, post, prop, or support.

BBQ offering

Dog means hot dog, and link refers to a sausage link. Rib and wing are also common barbecue offerings. “Rib” and “wing” may initially suggest body parts, which makes the food category easier to overlook.

___NECK

Add “neck” after each word: bottle neck, breakneck, gooseneck, and turtleneck. The four entries form familiar compounds or phrases with the same ending.

Can you still play the May 2 puzzle?

The New York Times Help Center says its Connections archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, and that archive play is available to All Access and Games subscribers. The archive affects certain statistics but not streaks. Access terms can change, so check the official Connections help page for current details.

For context, the NYT describes Connections as a game in which players sort 16 words into four groups of four sharing a theme. It says each puzzle has one solution and that words can appear to fit more than one category. That overlap is why it can help to identify a likely set, then wait to submit until the other words support it too.
