That phrase came from British TikTok creator Eloise Juliet’s personal impression after moving to Australia—not from a study establishing a national trait. The debate her video prompted turns on a more specific question: do people mean “How are ya?” as a greeting, or as an invitation to talk honestly?
What Eloise Juliet said about emotional openness in Australia
PerthNow reported on 8 April 2025 that Juliet had moved to Australia three months earlier when she posted her observations. She said she found it difficult to share authentic feelings and connected her impression to misogyny and men’s interactions with women. As PerthNow reproduced her words, she said, “Australians have a very weird and complicated relationship with emotions,” and that this created “a culture of emotionally-stunted people.”
She described telling someone she was not doing well and perceiving panic rather than interest in a genuine answer. She also said Australians seemed more immature than people she had encountered elsewhere. Those are Juliet’s interpretations of her experiences, as reported by PerthNow; they are not evidence that Australians generally avoid emotional openness.
Why “How are ya?” became part of the disagreement
One TikTok commenter offered a different reading of the exchange: “In Australia ‘How you going’ or ‘How are ya’ just means hello. We aren’t actually asking how you are.” On that interpretation, the question is often a casual greeting, and a brief conventional response is expected—not a detailed account of someone’s wellbeing.

That comment explains one possible source of misunderstanding, but it is an individual response, not an authoritative account of Australian speech. Other people may use the same words sincerely and welcome an honest answer. The meaning can depend on the relationship, setting and tone; the phrase alone cannot show what a particular person is ready to hear.
How Juliet and other TikTok users qualified the claim
PerthNow described the reactions as mixed. Some commenters disagreed with Juliet or suggested she had been around the wrong people. Another said they also wanted emotional connection and intellectual conversation but felt those were not priorities in their circles. These replies demonstrate differing experiences, not a representative picture of Australians.

YourLifeChoices later characterized the video as a generalisation and reproduced text attributed to Juliet in which she said the issue was “definitely not just a male thing.” She acknowledged meeting lovely people to whom her assessment did not apply and said it was based on her experience. The outlet also reported that she hoped people with similar experiences would feel less alone and that the video would spark conversation.
Do the reported survey figures prove a wider cultural pattern?
YourLifeChoices cited Plan International Australia’s Gender Compass survey while discussing the debate. It reported that 60 per cent believed Australia was close to or had already achieved gender equality, 50 per cent believed women were treated fairly in most areas of life, and 30 per cent believed there was a conflict against men.

Those figures cannot establish Juliet’s claim about emotional openness. In the YourLifeChoices article, the survey year, sample, field dates and question wording were not specified, and the original report was not supplied. They should therefore be read as figures reported by that outlet, not as a fully contextualised or independently checked measure of Australian attitudes.

It is reasonable to take Juliet’s account seriously as her experience while resisting the leap from that experience to a conclusion about an entire country. The comments point to competing explanations—different expectations about casual greetings, different social circles, and different comfort with personal disclosure—but none establishes how common any one experience is.
