She later brought the shock and fear of that diagnosis onto the stand-up stage with striking candor. The 2015 documentary Tig follows what came next in her personal life: her hope of becoming a mother and the beginning of her relationship with actor and comedian Stephanie Allynne. Notaro and Allynne married in 2015 and had twin sons via surrogate.
How Notaro turned a frightening diagnosis into candid comedy
Notaro was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts in 2012. In a 2019 TIME interview, she recalled the shock of hearing she had invasive cancer and described humor as a way to break the tension around a frightening moment. That was her personal response, not a claim that comedy treats cancer or changes its medical course.

“I kept thinking maybe I was cursed,” she said. “When I went in for my appointment and was diagnosed with invasive cancer, it took my breath away in horror-and like, oh my god, this is hilarious. Of course, it wasn’t hilarious but something has to break the tension.”
Her directness onstage made the illness part of her public story without turning it into a polished tale of easy triumph. The phrase “beat cancer” can suggest a complete medical account, but the reporting cited here does not establish her treatment chronology or current health status. Notaro’s experience is biographical, not medical advice.

What the documentary Tig follows
Released in 2015, Tig follows Notaro after her diagnosis as she considers motherhood and begins a relationship with Allynne. TIME reported that the documentary was due to debut on Netflix on July 17, 2015. That is a historical release detail; current streaming availability is not established here.
The film’s focus makes the title’s personal arc more precise: it is not a clinical account of cancer care, but a documentary about Notaro’s life after a life-altering diagnosis and the relationships and hopes that shaped what followed.

Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s marriage and family
Notaro and Allynne married in 2015, according to a 2018 Windy City Times interview. By the time of that interview, the couple had twin sons via surrogate. Notaro also said she remained interested in adopting siblings in the future; that was a possibility she discussed, not a confirmed plan or later outcome.

For Notaro’s own written perspective, I’m Just a Person is her memoir, discussed in the Windy City Times interview. Tig offers a documentary view of a particular stretch of her life, including her desire to become a mother and the start of her relationship with Allynne. The cited reporting establishes the film’s 2015 Netflix release, not its current catalog availability.
