The Dune: Part Two popcorn bucket was a sandworm-shaped AMC souvenir whose mouth-like lid and bristled “teeth” made it look suggestive—and helped turn a concession item into a viral talking point. Its fame did not start the collectible-bucket trend. It showed how far theater merchandise can now reach beyond holding popcorn: into fandom, moviegoing memories, and online spectacle.
What was the Dune: Part Two popcorn bucket?
AMC’s Dune: Part Two vessel was designed around the film’s sandworms. Its distinctive opening and teeth-like bristles prompted an unmistakably suggestive interpretation, which helped the bucket spread online. The reaction became part of the story: the design drew attention, and a Saturday Night Live parody kept the item in public conversation. Eater’s 2024 account and TIME’s 2024 reporting describe the bucket’s reception and its place in the wider collectibles business.
That attention makes the bucket an unusually memorable example, not proof that one piece of merchandise drove attendance or that movie tie-ins suddenly became strange in 2024.
Why are movie theater popcorn buckets getting so elaborate?
Theaters and studios can treat a vessel as more than packaging: it can be a film-specific souvenir, a display object, and a limited-time purchase connected to a theatrical release. Northeastern communication studies professor Steve Granelli described the appeal as a way for fans to display that they attended and remain invested in a film. That is one explanation for the appeal, not a universal motive for every buyer. Northeastern Global News also notes how a theater experience and a time-sensitive collectible can reinforce one another.

Creating these products takes coordination among theater chains, studios, and designers. The result can lean toward spectacle rather than everyday convenience. Rob Bennett, AMC’s director of food and beverage product strategy, told TIME, “We rank coolness over functionality kind of all the time.” He also said, “We really want to try and create the best souvenir for the fans.” Those priorities explain why some designs work better as keepsakes than as ordinary popcorn containers.
The trend started before Dune
Collectible theater vessels were already developing before the sandworm went viral. TIME reported that theaters adopted them in earnest around AMC’s 2019 R2-D2 bucket. Regal later described Barbie as a turning point for its own program. Those milestones suggest an evolving merchandising strategy, not a trend invented by Dune: Part Two.

There is a business incentive, too, though the available figure applies to AMC rather than the whole industry. TIME reported that AMC said its collectible concession vessels generated $54 million in revenue in 2023, compared with $0 in 2018. These are company figures relayed by TIME, not independently audited market-wide totals; they should not be read as the size of the entire novelty-bucket market.
What other movie buckets show about the trend
Examples from 2024 show that the format is not limited to oversized character heads or one theater chain. Eater, TIME, and Forbes reported a range of release tie-ins across AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. Forbes’ December 2024 rundown is an illustrative selection, not a complete catalog.

Not necessarily. Some elaborate vessels have usability drawbacks, and TIME’s reporting makes clear that design teams may put visual impact ahead of function. A bucket can still succeed as a souvenir even if its shape, lid, or features make it less convenient for eating from or storing. The practical question depends on the specific design; “popcorn bucket” does not guarantee that every item behaves like a conventional container.

Can you still buy the Dune: Part Two bucket?
Current stock and resale prices are not established by the cited reporting. Historical prices are especially easy to misread: Eater reported Dune-bucket sales around $50–$130 in its 2024 article, while TIME later reported an eBay resale at $300. Those are separate reporting snapshots, not a current price guide or a guarantee of completed-sale value today.
If you look for one, check whether a listing is for a new, used, or resale item; inspect condition and included parts; and distinguish an asking price from a completed sale. The cited coverage does not verify present availability, seller, authenticity, or current value.

What the bucket says about the theater experience
These vessels sit between concession packaging and movie merchandise. Their limited release windows can make them feel like souvenirs of a particular theatrical moment, while unusual designs give fans an object to display and audiences something to share and joke about. The sandworm bucket made that dynamic unusually visible: its design invited an immediate reaction, and the reaction became part of its cultural life.
That does not mean every elaborate bucket is useful, every buyer is collecting for the same reason, or the merchandise category can be measured from one chain’s reported revenue. It does show why theaters and studios keep exploring forms that are as memorable as the films they promote.
