Mexican boxer Israel Vazquez, a three-time super-bantamweight world champion, died on December 3, 2024, aged 46, after a battle with cancer. His 44–5 record and four-fight rivalry with Rafael Marquez made him one of the division’s defining fighters.
When did Israel Vazquez die, and how old was he?
Vazquez died on December 3, 2024, at age 46. The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced his death and described him as a three-time super-bantamweight champion. The Los Angeles Times reported that he had been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 sarcoma.
What was Israel Vazquez’s boxing record?
The WBC lists Vazquez’s professional record as 44 wins, five losses and 32 knockouts. He turned professional at 17 and competed from 1995 to 2010. In US coverage, the super-bantamweight division is also often called junior featherweight.
Vazquez won the vacant IBF super-bantamweight title in 2004, then went on to win the WBC and The Ring titles, according to the Los Angeles Times. The WBC highlights victories over Jhonny Gonzalez and Oscar Larios among the milestones on his path to championship status.

Why was Israel Vazquez’s rivalry with Rafael Marquez so significant?
Vazquez and fellow Mexican Rafael Marquez fought four times, finishing with two wins each. Their series became a defining part of Vazquez’s legacy: two elite fighters repeatedly tested one another in a rivalry that gave fans a sustained contest rather than a single marquee bout.
The WBC described the four fights as epic and reported that it was working with DAZN to produce the quartet for fans to watch. That announcement does not establish whether the fights are currently available in DAZN’s catalog.

How did injuries affect Vazquez’s career?
Vazquez underwent retina surgery three times, the WBC reported. A detached retina later affected his ability to defend his title: according to the Los Angeles Times, he was stripped of the WBC title in 2008 after he could not defend it. Injuries contributed to his retirement in 2010.
The reporting treats his cancer and boxing injuries as separate matters; it does not establish that boxing caused his cancer.

What did Vazquez do after retiring?
After leaving the ring, Vazquez ran a gym, trained amateur and professional fighters, and worked as a fight commentator. The WBC also reported that he was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
Tributes emphasized his character as much as his achievements. The WBC memorial report attributes this description to boxer Carlos “Famoso” Hernandez: “He was truly the best human being; kind, humble, and a devoted family man,”

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said in the organization’s tribute: “Thank you Israel for the many great memories you have given us in the ring, but mostly outside it. You are now Eternal. Rest in peace. Everything will be all right.” Trainer Freddie Roach’s tribute, as quoted by the WBC, read: “Always a World Champion an a legend in Boxing. One of the very best I had the privilege to work with. Israel my Friend, rest in peace.”
