Thunderbolts* is a Marvel team-up with more interest in the people inside the mission than in turning every scene into a universe-shaking event. The Associated Press review praises its cast and emotional focus, especially Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova; the trade-off is that familiar Marvel franchise-building still sits alongside the more contained story. It works best if you want a character-led ensemble with action, not an Avengers-scale spectacle.
What is Thunderbolts* about?
Marvel Studios describes the film as a story about an unconventional team of antiheroes. Its principal cast includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lewis Pullman. The U.S. release date listed by Disney is May 2, 2025. Disney’s official film page
The premise gives the film a different center of gravity from a conventional Avengers gathering: the focus is a squad of less prominent MCU characters. The Atlantic review frames Yelena as the center of that group story, while the Associated Press sees the film as relatively earthbound. Those are critical descriptions, not a claim that the movie leaves the wider Marvel universe behind.
Does the character-focused approach work?
For the Associated Press, the cast is a major strength, with Florence Pugh’s Yelena the standout. The review puts it plainly: “Most of all, Pugh commands every bit of the movie.” That is the AP reviewer’s assessment, rather than a quotation from Pugh or another interview subject. The film’s appeal, in this reading, comes not only from watching the ensemble operate as a team but from spending time with its characters’ emotional lives.
#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
The AP review singles out the final act’s internal, emotional struggle as a substantial part of the film. That emphasis distinguishes Thunderbolts* from a team-up built chiefly around escalating action. The action remains part of the package, but the critical case for the movie rests on how the characters and their inner conflicts give that spectacle a human scale.
How much does it feel like an MCU crossover?
The film’s story is relatively self-contained, but it is not wholly separate from Marvel’s franchise machinery. The AP describes it as pleasantly self-contained while noting familiar franchise-building elements. The Atlantic likewise sees the wider MCU as less present through much of the story, with the usual post-credits material reconnecting it to the larger universe.

- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
That balance is useful for viewers deciding what kind of crossover they want. The squad story is the main event, rather than a constant parade of universe-wide connections, but the film still participates in the MCU’s ongoing setup. The available reviews do not establish a definitive ranking against other Marvel team-ups, so it is more accurate to describe its approach than call it the best or worst entry.
Runtime, rating and content
The Associated Press lists a runtime of 126 minutes and a PG-13 rating. Its reported content descriptors are strong violence, language, thematic elements, and some suggestive and drug references. Associated Press review
