It included more failed attempts to escape and showed Bing Bong growing more desperate. The longer version was, in Kind’s words, “a lot sadder.” That account comes from Kind’s recollection, not an independently available original scene or screenplay.
Who Bing Bong is in Inside Out
Bing Bong is Riley’s imaginary friend, a remnant of her early childhood. The film treats him as part of a stage she has begun to outgrow. Director Pete Docter described him as a character who “sort of survived” after the filmmakers considered a group of discarded imaginary friends; producer Jonas Rivera said Bing Bong represents childhood joy passing. E! reported their comments.
That idea shaped the character’s role: Bing Bong is not simply a comic companion in Riley’s mind. His eventual loss gives the film a way to make growing up feel both loving and painful.
What the earlier version of Bing Bong’s exit showed
Kind recalled that the first version of the exit was “40 seconds to a minute longer” than the final scene. He said viewers saw more attempts to get out and watched Bing Bong become desperate: “You see him get a little desperate. It was a lot sadder.” TIME republished Kind’s account from an Entertainment Weekly report in 2015. Read the report.

- I blow a mean nose and I have a rockets, It runs on song power!
- Who's your friend who likes to play? Bing Bong, Bing Bong~ His rocket makes you yell "Hooray!" Bing Bong, Bing Bong~
The extra time matters because the finished scene already makes the audience sit with Bing Bong’s choice. Kind’s estimate suggests the earlier cut lingered longer on his struggle and the possibility that he might escape. The reporting does not establish the exact dialogue or provide an archived version of that scene, so its specific unseen moments should not be assumed.
Why Bing Bong stays behind
In the released film, Joy and Bing Bong are trapped in the pit of lost memories. Director Docter explained the scene’s physical logic: “I had this idea of Bing Bong being the added weight that prevents her from leaving.” When Bing Bong jumps away, Joy can get out, but he remains behind and disappears. Docter described the mechanism to the Los Angeles Times.
The sacrifice is also personal, not merely a plot device. Screenwriter Josh Cooley recalled that Docter proposed Bing Bong’s sacrifice as a way to show how much he loved Riley. In Cooley’s account of the character’s development, Bing Bong evolved from an early concept involving a group of imaginary friends into the figure whose final act expresses that love. Creative Screenwriting interviewed Cooley about the film’s writing.

Kind compared the sadness of the longer version to Bambi’s mother dying, but he did not say that comparison was Pixar’s formal reason for cutting it. He said of the final edit, “I think we felt exactly what we needed to feel in that scene.” The distinction is important: the available account records an actor’s estimate and reaction, not an official explanation for the edit.

In the finished film, Bing Bong’s disappearance lands through a restrained sequence: he gives Joy the chance to leave, and then vanishes. The longer version may have heightened the despair, but Kind’s comments suggest the filmmakers chose not to prolong it. The result lets his sacrifice register without turning the moment into an extended spectacle of suffering.
