How the rankings changed
- The poll leader changed: Tanjiro led in 2017; Zenitsu led in 2020.
- Giyu rose: he moved from fourth in 2017 to second in 2020.
- Muichiro rose sharply: the compilation reports that he went from 29th, with 55 votes in 2017, to third, with 11,948 votes in 2020. The full 2017 top ten above does not include his earlier entry.
These are differences between two votes held at different points in the manga’s serialization. The rank changes do not establish that any particular story event caused them. The poll tables count reader votes in Weekly Shonen Jump; they should not be blended with merchandise sales, search interest, informal online polls, or a present-day global fan ranking.

Does this show who is most popular now?
No. The latest official result located is the 2020 poll. A July 2026 Animate Times article discusses the Infinity Castle film and speculates that a future poll could change the order, including attention for characters such as Akaza, Gyomei Himejima, Kokushibo, and Yoriichi. It does not report a third poll or measured post-film popularity. The article’s film-related discussion is commentary, not a new vote tally.
Shueisha hosts an official second-poll PDF on the franchise domain, but its text was not extractable in the reviewed view; the exact figures presented here are attributed to the accessible Animate Times compilation rather than claimed as independently verified from that PDF. Official poll PDF page.

What the poll measures—and what it doesn’t
A popularity list is meaningful only with its date and method attached. These two results record votes associated with specific Weekly Shonen Jump issues; neither is a live poll nor a worldwide survey. The distinction matters for a series that continued to reach readers and viewers after the 2020 vote.
For context, Shonen Jump identifies Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba as a manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump beginning with issue 11 of 2016. Its premise follows Tanjiro after his family is killed and his sister Nezuko becomes a demon. Shonen Jump’s series page provides the publisher’s series information. The official anime character portal describes Tanjiro as a kind-hearted protagonist seeking to restore Nezuko and avenge his family, and Giyu as the Water Hashira who brought Tanjiro into the Corps; those descriptions explain their roles, not their popularity.
