Glastenbury is called a Vermont ghost town because its once-settled mountain landscape was largely abandoned after the timber economy faded. Its reputation for disappearances and the supernatural came later, through regional folklore—not documented explanations for the town’s decline. Legally, Glastenbury did not vanish: it remains an unorganized township in Bennington County.
What happened to Glastenbury, Vermont?
Glastenbury was chartered on August 20, 1761, by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth, according to the 2022 Glastenbury Town Plan. The township lies east of Shaftsbury, between Woodford and Sunderland, in some of Bennington County’s most mountainous terrain.
That geography made settlement difficult. The town plan describes steep slopes, poor soils, and a short growing season—conditions that limited farming. Glastenbury’s fortunes later depended on timber. As that resource was exhausted, the population dwindled to seven, the plan says.
Why is Glastenbury called a ghost town?
The phrase “ghost town” is a popular shorthand for Glastenbury’s abandoned settlements, but it can suggest that the place disappeared entirely. The state’s account instead connects the population decline to the timber economy and challenging land, not to unexplained events.

In 1937, the Vermont General Assembly disincorporated Glastenbury when its population was seven, according to the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration. The archive says this happened without a local vote. Nearby Somerset was also disincorporated that year, but its population was 20; that figure belongs to Somerset, not Glastenbury.
How did the chilling legend take hold?
Later accounts associated Glastenbury Mountain and nearby places with the “Bennington Triangle,” a regional label for stories about disappearances and other mysteries. The 2022 town plan says the disappearances of woodcutter Middie Rivers in 1945 and Bennington College student Paula Welden in 1946 helped encourage ghost-town legends.

Those stories should be kept distinct from what the official account establishes. The plan says Welden was last seen walking up Long Trail Road in Woodford and notes there is no evidence she entered Glastenbury. The disappearances are part of the region’s folklore; they do not establish a supernatural cause or explain Glastenbury’s depopulation.

Glastenbury remains an unorganized township in Bennington County. Vermont law lists it among the state’s unorganized towns, and the governor’s office lists a state-appointed supervisor for it: see the state’s unorganized-town statute and the governor’s boards and commissions listings.

So the “ghost town” label describes the remnants of settlement and the stories attached to the mountain, not the township’s legal status. Glastenbury’s documented history is one of difficult geography, a timber-based economy, and a small population; the chilling reputation grew around it afterward.
