Box Office Mojo reports a different total for the same movie, so the source matters: the figures below use The Numbers consistently and are nominal theatrical grosses, not inflation-adjusted earnings.
Highest-grossing Tom Cruise films: what the figures establish
The available figures identify the top title and several major franchise comparisons, but they do not establish a complete, consistently ranked list of every Cruise film. The figures below therefore are not presented as a definitive top ten. Unless otherwise noted, worldwide totals come from The Numbers’ current records accessed in 2026.
| Film | Release year | Worldwide gross | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top Gun: Maverick | 2022 | $1,452,163,362 | The Numbers, worldwide chart accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible—Fallout | 2018 | $786,269,620 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol | 2011 | $694,713,230 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation | 2015 | $688,858,992 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning | 2025 | $591,353,074 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One | 2023 | $565,394,309 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| Mission: Impossible | 1996 | $457,697,994 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
| The Mummy | 2017 | $409.2 million | Associated Press, October 4, 2026 |
| Top Gun | 1986 | $363,992,074 | The Numbers, franchise table accessed 2026 |
The table combines the leading title from The Numbers’ worldwide chart with selected franchise records and one reported non-franchise example. It is not a full-filmography ranking: the evidence does not verify every Cruise credit under a single inclusion policy for leading roles, supporting roles, cameos, and ensemble films.
Why does Top Gun: Maverick have two different grosses?
The Numbers lists Top Gun: Maverick at $1,452,163,362 worldwide. Box Office Mojo reports $1,503,260,455, broken out as $721,996,984 domestic and $781,263,471 foreign. These are distinct database totals; the cited records do not explain the discrepancy. They should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. #1 Best Overall
For the comparisons in this article, The Numbers is the consistent basis. Its all-time worldwide chart places Top Gun: Maverick at number 18 among all films in the cited current chart. Box-office chart totals can change as records are updated and rerelease earnings are accounted for.
How the Mission: Impossible films compare
Within The Numbers’ current Mission: Impossible franchise table, Fallout is the highest-grossing installment at $786,269,620 worldwide. Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation follow, with totals of $694,713,230 and $688,858,992. The later installments listed here are below those three in that table.
Rank #2
The series figures are useful for comparing the franchise, not for filling gaps in a career-wide ranking. For instance, the franchise record reports $457,697,994 for the 1996 original. That does not by itself establish how it ranks against every standalone Cruise film or other franchise entry under a complete, consistent filmography check.
What “highest-grossing” means here
- Worldwide theatrical gross: The figures are reported worldwide box-office earnings, rather than a measure of a film studio’s profit or Cruise’s personal earnings.
- Nominal dollars: These totals are not adjusted for inflation or worldwide ticket-price changes, so they do not show which film sold the most tickets across eras.
- Database-specific reporting: The Numbers and Box Office Mojo report different totals for Maverick. A meaningful comparison needs to name one source and use it consistently.
- Role inclusion matters: The Numbers’ actor chart counts the full gross of films it classifies as leading roles for each lead performer, including ensemble films. That career-aggregate rule does not settle how a separate ranking should treat cameos or supporting appearances.
The Numbers’ current leading-roles chart reports Cruise at $12,698,954,829 across 46 films and ranks him seventh. That is a cumulative actor-chart total—not the gross of one movie—and the site’s method assigns each qualifying film’s full gross to every performer it identifies as a lead. Sources and figures
The worldwide and franchise figures are from The Numbers’ records accessed in 2026; the separate Maverick comparison is from Box Office Mojo’s current worldwide chart. The Associated Press reported The Mummy’s gross as $409.2 million on October 4, 2026. Because chart totals and rerelease accounting may be updated, the named source and access period are part of each figure’s context.
