There is no official or universally accepted ranking of the best Star Wars characters. This list is an editorial ranking of 100 characters from screen stories across the franchise, including films and television. It uses narrative impact, character development, cultural legacy, audience attachment and contribution across eligible stories—not screen time, combat skill or Force power alone.

The order is inevitably debatable: the official StarWars.com Databank is a character reference, not a ranking, while Disney+ offers a guide to 19 characters and Complex published its own editorial top 50. Here, aliases and familiar versions of the same individual count as one character; distinct characters do not. The list focuses on screen canon rather than attempting to combine canon and Legends versions across books, comics and games.

How this ranking works

Each placement balances five editorial criteria. They are a framework for judgment, not measured statistics or an official Lucasfilm formula.

  • Narrative impact: how much the character changes events or other characters’ choices.
  • Character development: the quality and coherence of the character’s arc.
  • Cultural legacy and recognizability: the character’s lasting place in Star Wars and popular culture.
  • Audience affection and debate: the attachment, discussion or disagreement the character continues to inspire.
  • Contribution across eligible stories: meaningful work in the screen stories within this list’s scope.

These considerations overlap, but none is a shortcut for the others: a powerful fighter is not automatically a more compelling character, and a memorable design alone does not make a story arc strong. Complex’s Jamie Iovine described that publication’s separate 2025 ranking as weighing “impact, storytelling, legacy, fan love, and straight-up vibes.” That is one editorial precedent, not a universal standard.

The 100 greatest Star Wars characters

The ranking below is a considered editorial order, not a claim of consensus. Its screen-canon scope excludes Legends-only characters and does not attempt to rank every figure introduced in print or games.

  1. Luke Skywalker — The farm boy who becomes a Jedi gives the original saga its defining journey: idealism tested by failure, temptation and the choice to see good in another person.
  2. Darth Vader — A terrifying presence and the center of Star Wars’ most consequential family tragedy, Vader makes the conflict between power, fear and redemption personal.
  3. Leia Organa — Princess, senator, general and leader, Leia is never merely a prize or symbol. Her courage and political resolve shape the rebellion across generations.
  4. Han Solo — The self-interested smuggler who chooses to stand with others is one of the saga’s clearest, most satisfying transformations.
  5. Obi-Wan Kenobi — A mentor, survivor and reluctant keeper of painful truths, Obi-Wan links the prequel and original eras while embodying the Jedi ideals he cannot always protect.
  6. Yoda — His unusual manner conceals a demanding teacher whose lessons about fear, patience and failure outlast his screen appearances.
  7. Anakin Skywalker — His fall gives the saga its central account of how love, fear and the desire for control can turn extraordinary promise toward catastrophe.
  8. R2-D2 — The ever-resourceful astromech repeatedly carries vital information, improvises under pressure and connects stories without needing words.
  9. C-3PO — Nervous, fastidious and frequently out of his depth, Threepio provides both comedy and a consistent civilian perspective on galactic upheaval.
  10. Chewbacca — Han’s loyal friend is more than a co-pilot: his grief, courage and steadfast care give the saga some of its most human relationships.
  11. Rey — A scavenger seeking belonging becomes a central figure in the sequel trilogy’s argument over inheritance, identity and what it means to choose a legacy.
  12. Kylo Ren / Ben Solo — His conflict between the pull of darkness and the memory of who he was makes him one of the sequel era’s most volatile characters.
  13. Palpatine / Darth Sidious — The architect of the Empire and a patient manipulator whose political ascent makes the fall of the Republic feel earned rather than sudden.
  14. Grogu — His bond with Din Djarin gives the post-original-trilogy era a quiet emotional center, while his past opens a window onto the Jedi’s wider history.
  15. Din Djarin — A guarded bounty hunter’s evolving sense of responsibility turns a mission into a relationship and a reconsideration of what his creed demands.
  16. Ahsoka Tano — Introduced as a young Padawan, she grows into an independent voice whose doubts about institutions and war give the animated era unusual depth.
  17. Padmé Amidala — A capable political leader whose commitment to democracy becomes increasingly tragic as the Republic fails around her.
  18. Lando Calrissian — Charming and pragmatic, Lando’s choices reveal the cost of trying to survive between powerful sides—and the possibility of making amends.
  19. Qui-Gon Jinn — His willingness to trust the living Force sets him apart from the Jedi hierarchy and helps set the prequel story in motion.
  20. Jabba the Hutt — A crime lord whose influence makes the criminal underworld feel like a force in its own right, not merely an obstacle for heroes.
  21. Finn — A former stormtrooper who breaks from the First Order gives the sequel trilogy a compelling starting point for exploring conscience and choice.
  22. Jyn Erso — Her distrust of grand causes gives way to commitment in a story that makes the cost of the Rebellion tangible.
  23. Cassian Andor — A hardened intelligence operative reveals the compromises and sacrifices beneath the Rebellion’s heroic image.
  24. Boba Fett — A spare screen presence became one of the franchise’s most enduring figures, built around menace, mystery and an instantly recognizable silhouette.
  25. Wilhuff Tarkin — His cool administrative cruelty gives the Empire a face that is frightening precisely because it treats mass violence as procedure.
  26. Padawan Kanan Jarrus — A survivor of Order 66 who must grow into mentorship, Kanan’s gradual acceptance of responsibility anchors Rebels.
  27. Ezra Bridger — A streetwise orphan learns to turn self-preservation into solidarity, giving his story a clear emotional progression.
  28. Chirrut Îmwe — His faith in the Force, despite not being a Jedi, offers a distinctive expression of belief and courage.
  29. Saw Gerrera — A partisan whose willingness to use extreme methods complicates the clean division between resistance and extremism.
  30. Mace Windu — A formidable Jedi whose confidence and severity help illuminate the Order’s strengths as well as its institutional limits.
  31. Bo-Katan Kryze — A Mandalorian leader shaped by political failure and renewed purpose, she brings the struggles over Mandalore into focus.
  32. Asajj Ventress — An assassin and former Sith apprentice whose shifting loyalties and search for agency make her more than a formidable opponent.
  33. Count Dooku — His aristocratic poise and history as a Jedi give the Separatist cause a persuasive public face, even as he serves darker ambitions.
  34. General Grievous — A theatrical and relentless hunter whose physicality makes him a memorable threat in the Clone Wars.
  35. Wedge Antilles — A grounded, capable pilot who repeatedly survives the saga’s most dangerous battles without needing destiny to explain his value.
  36. Mon Mothma — A measured political leader whose work building a coalition shows that rebellion requires patient organization as well as daring.
  37. Admiral Ackbar — A respected strategist whose calm command gives the Rebel Alliance a credible military presence.
  38. Fennec Shand — A precise, self-possessed mercenary whose alliances are shaped by judgment rather than sentimentality.
  39. Hera Syndulla — A pilot and leader whose care for her crew makes the Ghost’s found family feel like a real political and emotional unit.
  40. Grand Admiral Thrawn — A calculating Imperial commander who stands out through strategic observation rather than brute force.
  41. Jango Fett — A skilled bounty hunter whose role in the clone army’s origins gives him significance beyond his brief time on screen.
  42. Padmé’s handmaiden Sabé — Her loyalty and ability to act in Padmé’s place make the queen’s protection detail more than ceremonial.
  43. Chancellor Valorum — A decent but ineffectual leader whose political weakness helps show how the Republic can be undermined from within.
  44. Poe Dameron — A gifted pilot whose confidence is tested by the difference between daring action and responsible leadership.
  45. Rose Tico — Her commitment to protecting ordinary lives gives the sequel trilogy a direct statement about what resistance is for.
  46. L3-37 — A droid with a sharp political voice whose insistence on droid liberation expands the franchise’s questions about personhood.
  47. Qi’ra — Her path from shared beginnings with Han to a dangerous place in the criminal underworld gives Solo an unresolved edge.
  48. Dryden Vos — A polished and unpredictable crime boss whose violence is hidden behind performance and control.
  49. Greef Karga — His movement from guild official to ally gives Din Djarin’s early adventures a useful view of life beyond the Empire’s central conflict.
  50. Kuiil — A practical, self-reliant Ugnaught whose patience and generosity help define the humane tone of The Mandalorian.
  51. IG-11 — A reprogrammed assassin droid whose changing purpose turns a comic threat into an unexpectedly affecting protector.
  52. Max Rebo — A small but memorable reminder that the galaxy has cultures and working lives beyond its wars and rulers.
  53. Wicket W. Warrick — The Ewok who helps the Rebels on Endor makes an underestimated community part of the saga’s decisive victory.
  54. Logray — The Ewok elder and shaman represents a society with its own traditions and authority, not simply a group of cute allies.
  55. Nien Nunb — A dependable pilot whose partnership with Lando helps make the Rebel fleet feel like a coalition of people, not just familiar heroes.
  56. Greedo — His brief encounter with Han became a lasting flashpoint for fans debating character, editing and the meaning of a single scene.
  57. Darth Maul — His striking debut became only the beginning of a longer story of survival, obsession and revenge across animated and live-action appearances.
  58. Shmi Skywalker — Her love for Anakin is inseparable from the hardship that shapes his childhood and the loss that deepens his fear.
  59. Watto — A self-interested dealer whose control over Shmi and Anakin gives the prequels’ early chapters a concrete picture of exploitation.
  60. Jar Jar Binks — A divisive comic figure whose role in the Republic’s political decline is more consequential than his broad manner first suggests.
  61. Captain Rex — A clone trooper whose loyalty and growing capacity for independent judgment make the human cost of the Clone Wars visible.
  62. Fives — His attempt to uncover the truth about the clone army’s programming makes the machinery of the Republic’s downfall intensely personal.
  63. Hondo Ohnaka — A self-serving pirate whose shifting bargains bring levity and unpredictability to stories otherwise dominated by armies and institutions.
  64. Cad Bane — A cool, professional bounty hunter whose confidence makes him a credible danger to Jedi and politicians alike.
  65. Satine Kryze — A pacifist leader trying to keep Mandalore out of war, Satine gives the planet’s political conflict a principled counterpoint.
  66. Mother Talzin — The leader of the Nightsisters brings a distinct tradition of power and a formidable presence to the animated stories.
  67. Boil — A clone trooper whose compassion for civilians challenges the idea that the clone army is simply a uniform mass.
  68. Uncle Owen — His caution may frustrate Luke, but it grows out of a desire to keep the boy alive in a dangerous galaxy.
  69. Aunt Beru — A quiet, caring presence whose ordinary life on Tatooine makes the violence that reaches the Lars homestead hit harder.
  70. Biggs Darklighter — His friendship with Luke gives the Rebellion a personal connection to the life Luke left behind.
  71. Porkins — A brief but memorable pilot whose presence helps make the Rebel assault feel dangerous for more than the central cast.
  72. Bossk — One of the bounty hunters enlisted by the Empire, his distinctive look and menace make a small role linger.
  73. 4-LOM — A calculating droid bounty hunter whose unusual design helps give the Empire’s hired hunters an eclectic character.
  74. Zuckuss — A mysterious bounty hunter whose presence adds to the sense that the galaxy’s underworld is larger than the heroes’ immediate orbit.
  75. Plo Koon — A thoughtful Jedi whose compassion toward his clone pilots offers a humane contrast to the Order’s military role.
  76. Kit Fisto — A personable Jedi whose confidence and warmth distinguish him amid the prequel era’s more austere masters.
  77. Shaak Ti — A Jedi general associated with the defense and training of the clone army, her story sits at the intersection of the Order and its war.
  78. Bail Organa — A principled senator whose quiet work helps preserve opposition to the Empire after the Republic is gone.
  79. Breha Organa — The queen of Alderaan helps establish the family and home that shape Leia’s early life.
  80. Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios — A displaced Lasat who turns anger over his people’s suffering into loyalty to the Ghost crew.
  81. Sabine Wren — An artist, fighter and Mandalorian whose personal conflicts connect the Ghost crew’s story to Mandalore’s future.
  82. Chopper — The Ghost’s abrasive astromech is an inventive and chaotic partner whose loyalty appears in actions more often than manners.
  83. Kallus — An Imperial officer whose change of allegiance in Rebels is gradual enough to feel earned.
  84. Crosshair — His devotion to the Empire after his squadmates defect makes loyalty, conditioning and choice central to his story.
  85. Omega — A young clone whose curiosity and empathy bring a different perspective to the Bad Batch’s life on the run.
  86. Hunter — The squad’s tracking specialist is defined as much by his protective instincts as his military training.
  87. Tech — An analytical member of the Bad Batch whose precise thinking is paired with a quiet commitment to his team.
  88. Wrecker — His exuberance and strength could make him a one-note bruiser; his affection for his squad gives him more warmth.
  89. Echo — A clone survivor whose experience of being used by the war machine gives him a distinct place in the Bad Batch.
  90. Dedra Meero — An ambitious Imperial supervisor whose methodical pursuit of resistance cells makes bureaucracy feel threatening.
  91. Luthen Rael — A cultivated antiques dealer concealing a revolutionary’s work, he embodies the moral compromises of building a rebellion.
  92. Syril Karn — His hunger for order and recognition provides an unnerving portrait of how authoritarian power can attract the dissatisfied.
  93. Maarva Andor — Her stubborn care for Ferrix and its people makes local belonging a source of resistance.
  94. Kino Loy — A prison floor manager whose limited view of the world changes when he recognizes the reality of his captivity.
  95. Unkar Plutt — A scrap dealer whose small, harsh world makes Rey’s early struggle for food and dignity concrete.
  96. Maz Kanata — A long-lived observer whose connections to the past and present give the sequel trilogy a link to older conflicts.
  97. DJ — A self-described survivor whose refusal to commit gives the war’s moral choices an uncomfortable gray area.

What a top-100 list can—and cannot—claim

The official StarWars.com Databank organizes character references across eras and series; it is useful for locating characters, not for establishing who ranks above whom. Disney+’s guide pairs brief character context with notable scenes, while Complex’s May 2, 2025 list is another publication’s explicitly editorial ranking. Neither establishes a shared audience consensus or a definitive order.

Rank #2
STAR WARS Epic Hero Series Two Pack, Darth Vader & Stormtrooper 4-Inch Action Figure & Accessories, Toys for 4 Year Old Boys and Girls
  • STAR WARS ACTION FIGURES: These 4-inch scale (10 cm) Star Wars figures features character-inspired design and detail
  • ACTION FIGURE ACCESSORIES: This Star Wars set also comes with a red Lightsaber and blaster accessory that easily fits in the figure's hands
  • POSEABLE PLAY: This Star Wars toy features multiple points of articulation and stands on its own so kids can create awesome action poses
  • COMPATIBLE ACROSS EPIC HERO SERIES WORLD OF PLAY: This figure is compatible with most accessories, vehicles, and figures in Hasbro's exclusive Epic Hero Series. (Each sold separately. Subject to availability)
  • STAR WARS GIFTS FOR KIDS: Look for other Star Wars toys including Grogu, the Mandalorian, Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and a stormtrooper to collect or give as gifts for 4 year old boys and girls

That distinction matters especially for “ever.” A screen-focused list can compare characters with substantially different amounts of story, but it cannot stand in for every book, comic, game or Legends continuity. The franchise keeps expanding, so new stories can also change how a character’s legacy is understood.
