As of the October 6, 2026 Season 3 premiere, the promised explanation for Gibbs’s silence about Lala Dominguez has not yet been established in the available episode coverage. The Season 1 finale left a different question hanging: what happened to Lala after her car crash?
Why did Gibbs never mention Lala?
It remains a continuity mystery. Before Season 3, co-showrunner David J. North said, “We will find out this season why Gibbs has never mentioned Lala.” Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs and is an executive producer, also acknowledged the gap: “I did 20 years of this show and never mentioned her name. There’s got to be a reason for that, and I look forward to finding out what that is.”

Those comments promised an answer; they did not reveal it. The October 6, 2026 Season 3 premiere recap describes developments connecting the 1990s story with Gibbs’s Alaska timeline and the continuation of his relationship with Lala, but it does not establish why she was absent from the original NCIS series. It would be premature to claim that the premiere, or the Season 1 finale, resolves the question.
Who is Lala Dominguez on NCIS: Origins?
Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez is an NIS agent in the series’ 1990s story and a central figure in Gibbs’s past. Co-showrunner North said the older Gibbs’s narration is “largely about Lala.” The show frames the Alaska-based Gibbs as reflecting on his life and choosing not to leave his story unwritten, linking that narration to the events of his early career.

What happened to Lala in the NCIS: Origins Season 1 finale?
The finale, “Cecilia,” aired April 28, 2025. Lala persuaded her friend Lara Macy to drop the inquiry into Pedro Hernandez’s murder and Gibbs’s role in it. She was on her way to tell Gibbs what she had done when her car crashed. Gibbs’s narration indicates that he would learn only later that Lala had protected him.
The crash created uncertainty about Lala’s immediate fate, but it is not, by itself, an explanation for why Gibbs never said her name during the original series. The two questions are related, not interchangeable.
