What the January Nintendo Direct revealed
Nintendo and Illumination announced that the presentation showed Yoshi for the first time in the animated film, which is based on the world of Super Mario Bros. and follows 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The announcement describes the Yoshi reveal as the focus; it does not provide a broader rundown of game announcements. Nintendo and Illumination’s January 25 announcement.
The title’s “year’s first” wording should be read as framing, rather than a verified ranking: the announcement confirms a Nintendo Direct on January 25, but does not say it was the first Direct held in 2026.
How it differs from the other movie Directs
The January Yoshi reveal was one milestone in the film’s promotion, not the only movie-focused presentation. Nintendo’s movie page lists these separate events:

These dates and descriptions are listed on Nintendo’s official movie page. The March event was not the January presentation, and its final-trailer purpose was different from the Yoshi first look.
Film, cast and credits
Nintendo describes The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., following the 2023 film. Nintendo and Illumination announced that Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri co-produced it; Nintendo and Universal Pictures co-financed it; and Universal Pictures distributed it worldwide.

The January announcement lists Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, Matthew Fogel as screenwriter, and Brian Tyler as composer. Its cast list includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Brie Larson as Rosalina. These are credits reported by Nintendo and Illumination, not all roles newly announced at the January Direct. January announcement and credits.
Updated release dates by region
The U.S. and many-market date changed in the January 25 announcement. Nintendo and Illumination’s November 2025 announcement had set April 3, 2026 for the United States and many other markets; the January announcement moved that date to April 1. Japan’s release remained April 24, 2026, while selected territories were scheduled for dates across April. Nintendo’s current U.S. movie page also lists April 1. Check the relevant local listing for a specific territory, since the date is not identical worldwide. Why Nintendo connected the film to the Galaxy games
In a February 2026 investor Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company was watching audience response because the film was the second motion picture Nintendo had actively helped produce. He also said Nintendo hoped the film’s approach would create a “positive ripple effect” for its dedicated video game platform business. Nintendo’s February 2026 investor Q&A.
Furukawa specifically said Nintendo hoped more people would pick up Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, which he described as having been released the previous year. That makes the collection a relevant companion for viewers who want to explore the games’ Galaxy setting, but it was not an announcement from the January movie Direct.
What the reveal means for viewers
The clearest takeaway from the January presentation is limited but concrete: Yoshi will appear in the film, and Nintendo and Illumination chose the Direct to offer the first look. The separate March presentation later supplied the final trailer, while earlier promotion had introduced the trailer and additional cast details. Release timing depends on territory, so the U.S. date should not be assumed to apply everywhere.
