He pursued the role for years because he was a longtime fan, and he asked for a speaking part in a scene important enough to survive the final edit. His character’s line is just two words: “Speak normally.”
What role did Jeff Bezos play in Star Trek Beyond?
Bezos played a Starfleet Official—not a named alien character—in Justin Lin’s film, released on July 8, 2016, according to Paramount’s production announcement. The heavily made-up official appears during a scene with Kalara, the rescued spacefarer played by Lydia Wilson.
As Kalara prepares for an auto-translated interview with Captain Kirk and a Starfleet officer, Bezos’s character tells her, “Speak normally,” then leaves. The moment is a brief interruption in the scene, not a speaking role built around Bezos himself.
Why did Bezos want a Star Trek cameo?
Bezos had been asking Paramount for a part for years. At a 2016 Museum of Flight Pathfinder Awards event, he described his persistence: “For years, I have been begging Paramount, which is owned by Viacom, to let me be in a ‘Star Trek’ movie.”

He was willing to be unrecognizable beneath extensive makeup, but had two conditions: he wanted to speak, and he wanted the scene to matter to the story. As he put it, “I’ll put any amount of makeup on. I’ll be invisible, nobody will know it’s me. But I want a speaking part, and I want it to be in a scene that is central to the story line so that I cannot end up on the cutting-room floor.”
The Kalara scene gave him both: a line and a place in the film’s narrative. Bezos later called the experience “super-fun” and “a bucket list item.”
What was filming the cameo like?
Director Justin Lin said Bezos was deeply engaged during the shoot, despite arriving with a large entourage and waiting while the crew filmed three scenes that day. Lin recalled multiple takes and said, “He just nailed it every time.” Co-writer Doug Jung also recalled Bezos in extensive alien makeup, as reported by The Washington Post.
How long is Bezos on screen?
GeekWire estimated the cameo at about eight seconds and placed it at roughly 13:12 into the film. Those are viewing guides, not fixed timings: playback position can vary by edition or platform. The moment to look for is Kalara’s interview preparation and the official’s brief instruction before he exits.
