Dave Stewart of Eurythmics is the clearest famous Sunderland supporter: the Premier League describes the musician as a fan of his hometown club and recounts his childhood trips to Roker Park. Other names have different levels of evidence behind them—from long-standing allegiance to a recent appearance in a Sunderland shirt.
Which famous people are known Sunderland supporters?
The strongest examples in the available coverage are Dave Stewart, former athlete Steve Cram and songwriter Sir Tim Rice. The Premier League names all three among Sunderland’s famous fans, but gives the most detail about Stewart and his connection to the club.
Dave Stewart
The Premier League’s 16 March 2026 roundup describes Eurythmics musician Dave Stewart as a supporter of his hometown club. It recalls his account of growing up interested in playing football for Sunderland and going to Roker Park as a child—an experience he called “one of the most exciting things” in his life. The article also reports that Stewart said he goes “mad” if he cannot find Sunderland matches on television. Those remarks are relayed by the Premier League; its page does not identify the ITV speaker or provide the underlying interview details. Read the Premier League’s account of famous fans.
Steve Cram
The Premier League also names former athlete Steve Cram. A Sunderland Echo gallery published on 19 June 2025 and updated on 22 June describes him as an avid fan and notes his support for the Foundation of Light, the club’s charity. These details make his association more substantial than a single sighting in club colours. See the Sunderland Echo gallery.

Sir Tim Rice
Songwriter Sir Tim Rice is named alongside Cram and Stewart in the Premier League roundup. That article establishes him as a famous Sunderland fan, but supplies less supporting detail about his history with the club than it does for Stewart.
Why some celebrity names are only “supposed” to be fans
Celebrity-supporter lists often combine very different kinds of evidence. The Sunderland Echo gallery’s stated scope includes people seen at the Stadium of Light, people posting about the club, and people wearing Sunderland colours. Those are public associations, not proof that everyone included is a lifelong supporter. A reported childhood connection or repeated match-following is stronger evidence of durable allegiance than a single shirt appearance.

- Stronger evidence: a direct statement of support, a reported history with the club, or repeated behavior such as attending matches or following broadcasts.
- More limited evidence: one social-media post, a matchday sighting, or wearing Sunderland colours in a particular event or relationship context.
JoJo Siwa’s Sunderland shirt appearance
JoJo Siwa is a recent, visible example, but the context matters. Sports Illustrated reported that she wore a Sunderland jersey, performed in it, and said: “I got my Sunderland jersey on (…) I’m just getting adopted into the Sunderland family.” The report connected the moment to her relationship with Chris Hughes. It is fair to describe this as a public expression of support or a new association with the club; it does not establish long-standing or childhood fandom. Read Sports Illustrated’s report on Siwa.
Her appearance also explains why “Sunderland shirt” or “Sunderland AFC jersey” can be useful search terms if you are looking for the kind of shirt mentioned in the report. The coverage does not identify a particular season, model, seller, or listing.

How to read Sunderland celebrity-fan lists
There is no single standard for what qualifies someone as a famous supporter. Treat a roundup as a collection of documented connections, then check the type of evidence behind each name: a direct declaration, a long-running personal connection, or simply a recent public moment. On that scale, Stewart’s hometown and childhood history are especially well documented, while Siwa’s reported jersey appearance is best understood as a recent association.
