Law & Order: Special Victims Unit began in 1999 with a core cast that included Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni, Ice-T, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek. At the start of Season 27, Hargitay and Ice-T were the only members of that original group still on the show; Peacock’s Season 28 starring list includes both, alongside Kelli Giddish and other current cast members.
Who is still on SVU now?
Peacock’s Season 28 page lists these actors as stars of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane, Aimé Donna Kelly and Corey Cott. The page’s starring list is not a complete guest-cast roster, and it does not guarantee that every listed actor appears in every episode. Peacock’s series page advertises new episodes for streaming the day after they air.

Original cast members: then and now
TIME identified five original cast members in a September 2025 account: Hargitay, Meloni, Ice-T, the late Richard Belzer and Dann Florek. It reported that only Hargitay and Ice-T remained from that group at the beginning of Season 27. Both are also on Peacock’s Season 28 starring list.
| Actor and character | Then | Now, according to the cited sources |
|---|---|---|
| Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson | Original cast member | Still listed among the Season 28 stars by Peacock. |
| Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler | Original cast member | TIME says he now has his own Dick Wolf universe series, Law & Order: Organized Crime; he is not one of the two original members TIME says remained at the start of Season 27. |
| Ice-T as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola | Original cast member | Still listed among the Season 28 stars by Peacock. |
| Richard Belzer as John Munch | Original cast member | TIME identifies him as late; he was not one of the two original members TIME says remained at the start of Season 27. |
| Dann Florek as Captain Cragen | Original cast member | Not among the two original members TIME says remained at the start of Season 27. |
These comparisons distinguish original membership from current starring status. The cited sources establish the Season 27 and Season 28 snapshots; they do not provide a complete episode-by-episode appearance history for every former cast member.

Kelli Giddish’s return shows why cast status can change
A departure does not always mean a permanent exit. Peacock’s Season 27 preview says Giddish returned as a series regular as Sergeant Amanda Rollins. She also appears on its Season 28 starring list. That makes her a useful example of why a cast timeline should separate a temporary departure from a lasting one. Read Peacock’s Season 27 preview.
