For a critic-informed mix of styles, start with Hit Man for a nimble crime caper, Hundreds of Beavers for eccentric visual slapstick, or The Fall Guy for action-comedy spectacle. If you prefer satire, try American Fiction; for a warmer caper, choose Thelma. Where each film is streaming or available to rent changes by country and date, so check the current listing for your region before you watch.
How this list defines the best comedies of 2024
There is no objective winner: comedy depends on taste, and these films range from broad action to unsettling surrealism. This is a critic-informed selection of notable 2024 comedies, chosen to represent distinct comic styles rather than to claim a definitive ranking. Time Out’s comedy-focused list supplies several of the picks; the Associated Press included Thelma in its year-end selections.
Year labels can vary by list. Metacritic’s 2024 eligibility rules counted a film if it was released in at least one U.S. theater or directly to streaming or VOD between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Its year-end chart was not comedy-only: it ranked eligible films by weighted Metascore and required at least seven professional reviews for inclusion. That is useful context, not proof of a universal comedy ranking. Metacritic’s methodology and year-end list.
Which 2024 comedy should you watch?
| Film | Comic style | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hit Man | Crime caper | A quick-moving story built around a man adopting different personas while working with police. |
| Hundreds of Beavers | Visual slapstick | Viewers who enjoy eccentric, largely silent-style physical comedy and anarchic absurdity. |
| The Fall Guy | Action comedy | A broad, energetic mix of stunt spectacle, romance, and a missing movie star. |
| American Fiction | Social satire and family drama | Viewers looking for sharper cultural satire with an emotional family story. |
| Poor Things | Provocative, surreal comedy | Adults open to unsettling themes, physical comedy, and Mark Ruffalo’s comic performance. |
| Thelma | Warm caper | A more accessible story about an older woman trying to recover money taken by a scammer. |
Time Out highlights the script, Glen Powell’s performance, and escalating comic situations in Hit Man; the film suits viewers after a nimble contemporary caper. Its December 16, 2024 entry said it was on Netflix after a brief cinema stint. That is a historical listing, not confirmation of today’s catalog. Time Out’s 2024 comedy picks.

For visual and physical comedy
Hundreds of Beavers follows a cider maker turned fur trapper battling beavers in deliberately silly, largely silent-style fashion. Its appeal is the inventive physical business and absurd escalation, not realistic storytelling. It is the most eccentric pick here.
For a big, energetic crowd-pleaser
The Fall Guy puts a stunt performer at the center of a story involving a missing movie star. The stunts provide the spectacle, while the pairing of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt gives it a romantic-comedy thread. Choose it when you want action as much as jokes.

For satire with something to say
In American Fiction, a Black novelist writes a deliberately stereotyped book that unexpectedly succeeds. The comedy comes through social farce, but the film also makes room for family drama; it is more pointed and reflective than a light comedy.
For dark, provocative humor
Poor Things is not a light or all-ages choice. Time Out points to Emma Stone’s physical comedy and Mark Ruffalo’s comic performance, alongside the film’s provocative themes. Pick it for something surreal and challenging rather than comfort viewing.

For a warmer caper
Thelma centers on an older woman trying to get back money stolen by a scammer. The Associated Press described it as an enjoyable, sharply assembled comedy and included it among its year-end picks. AP said it was streaming on Hulu when its article appeared; that mention does not establish current availability. The Associated Press’s 2024 year-end selections.
Other 2024 comedies to consider
- Deadpool & Wolverine is a meta, joke-dense superhero comedy.
- The Nature of Love is a French-Canadian romantic comedy.
- Kinds of Kindness is a pitch-black, surreal triptych.
- Mean Girls is a musical teen satire.

Where to watch these movies now
Streaming rights and digital rental or purchase options change by country and over time. The available listings cited here are historical, so they cannot establish where a film is available in October 2026. Check the film’s current page on the services available in your country, or use an availability guide that links to provider listings. Confirm whether the title is included with a subscription or requires a separate rental or purchase; those are different ways to watch.
Metacritic’s year-end page illustrates why dates matter: its entries gave time-specific rental, purchase, or anticipated streaming information for films such as A Real Pain and The Wild Robot. Those past notes are not evidence of their present catalogs. Check Metacritic’s year-end page for its original context. Moviefone also maintains a 2024 comedy index with some “Where to Watch” links, but its index alone does not establish a reliable current catalog for every title. Moviefone’s 2024 comedy index.
