Their interviews also describe a painterly digital look, a voice performance built around Roz’s emotional growth, and music and sound that carry unusual weight in the film’s quieter passages.
What is The Wild Robot about, and who made the film?
The 2024 animated film follows ROZZUM unit 7134, a robot called Roz who is stranded on an island. As she learns to live among its animals, she forms bonds and takes responsibility for raising an orphaned gosling. Chris Sanders wrote and directed the film; Jeff Hermann produced it. The story is adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated middle-grade novel, first published in 2016, which DreamWorks describes as a #1 New York Times bestseller

What did the filmmakers preserve—and what did they change?
Hermann describes the adaptation as an effort to retain Brown’s tone, themes, and principal story beats while making changes. As he put it, “In any adaptation, changes are inevitable but as huge fans of the book ourselves, our mission was to not lose sight of the tone and themes of Peter’s story and we were careful to also hold onto the main story beats contained within his book, albeit with some alterations.” NBCUniversal Media interview, September 20, 2024
Fink becomes a central character
One clear example is Fink, whose role grows from a minor part in the book into a central presence in the film. Hermann says that gives Roz a character with a contrasting outlook to engage with. Fink’s survival-minded skepticism gives the story a way to test its faith in kindness through conflict and relationship, rather than leaving the idea as an abstract lesson.

Trimming and adding complications
Sanders says he trimmed some characters and added complications when he felt the story had become too linear, while keeping those choices in service of Brown’s story. The result, as described by the filmmakers, is not a scene-for-scene transfer but a selective adaptation: preserve the emotional and thematic spine, then reshape details to make the feature’s dramatic progression work.
Kindness as a survival skill
Hermann attributes the phrase “Kindness is a survival skill” to Brown as a guiding principle shared with the filmmakers. Sanders says Brown brought up the idea in their first conversation, and Sanders placed it in Fink’s dialogue. The contrast between that belief and Fink’s practical suspicion gives the film a recurring question to explore: can care for others help someone survive, not merely make them kinder? How does the film make the island feel painterly?
Hermann says the filmmakers wanted a computer-generated style with a hand-crafted sensibility. In their visual plan, the robots look cleaner and less painterly than the island’s wilderness; as Roz becomes more integrated into that environment, her appearance gradually takes on more of its painterly character. The visual contrast makes her changing relationship with the island legible without relying only on dialogue.
Sanders describes digitally painted environments and an impressionistic approach. He says Washington’s Olympic National Park informed the look of wet foliage and ferns, and identifies Tyrus Wong’s work on Bambi and Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro as inspirations. “Every sky is painted,” he said, describing the production’s treatment of its environments. These are the filmmakers’ accounts of their creative approach, rather than independent technical documentation of the animation pipeline. The Credits interview, October 2, 2024

How does Lupita Nyong’o’s voice performance shape Roz?
Sanders says casting director Christi Soper suggested Lupita Nyong’o for Roz. He describes Nyong’o as carefully analyzing how the robot thinks and collaborating with him on an early voice defined by “engineered optimism.” That performance changes as Roz develops. Instead of treating Roz as a machine that simply needs a distinctive vocal effect, the approach links how she sounds to how she understands the world and grows into her relationships.
Why do music and sound matter so much?
Hermann says the film has less dialogue than a typical animated feature, so the filmmakers deliberately made room for music to lead emotionally. “By design, we created spaces for our characters to go quiet and allow the music to take center stage as the best music can convey more emotion than any words can,” he said. He identifies composer Kris Bowers and the Skywalker Sound team as important contributors. Bowers joined about two years before the film was completed, allowing the score to develop alongside the evolving film. The BFI also describes a live-musician recording session and the film’s goose-flight sequence, illustrating how score and sound support a key visual passage.
