Spoilers ahead for Season 2, Episode 1 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, also known as The Book of Carol. AMC+ lists the premiere as “La gentillesse des étrangers”; Ready Steady Cut renders the French title as “The Kindness of Strangers.” The episode follows Daryl at the Nest in France and Carol’s separate effort to reach him from the United States.
What happens in “La gentillesse des étrangers”?
Two weeks after deciding to stay in France, Daryl is living at the Nest with Laurent. He teaches the boy how to defend himself against walkers, but the lessons sharpen a disagreement with Losang, who fears that training Laurent to fight could erode the empathy he sees as central to the boy.

That debate becomes harder to keep theoretical as Genet’s forces threaten the Union and capture allies, including Fallou and Emile. Daryl is frustrated by the Nest’s reluctance to respond. When the group learns prisoners are being moved, a chance to attempt a rescue appears. Daryl takes part, but Losang’s caution shapes the response, leaving the community’s security and leadership tensions unresolved.
Why is Daryl at odds with Losang?
The conflict is not simply whether Laurent should learn to fight. Daryl sees practical preparation as necessary when danger is already approaching the Nest and its allies. Losang worries that violence will change Laurent and compromise the community’s values. Genet’s threat puts those priorities into direct tension: restraint may preserve the Nest’s principles, but it may also leave people exposed.

How does Carol get a plane to France?
Carol’s story unfolds separately in the United States as she follows Daryl’s trail. She meets Ash, a grieving survivor who has a plane. To persuade him to help, Carol tells him that her daughter Sophia may still be alive in France. The claim is false, and Ash’s grief makes the deception especially consequential: he agrees to leave with Carol because of the story she has told him.
At the episode’s end, Carol and Ash take off in the homemade plane, planning to make refueling stops on the way to France. They have begun the journey, but Carol and Daryl do not reunite in this premiere.

What the ending sets up
The episode closes on two unresolved journeys. Daryl is trying to make a home in a community whose cautious approach clashes with his response to immediate danger. Carol has found a way to cross the Atlantic, but that route rests on a serious lie to Ash. The parallel structure advances both characters without bringing them together yet.
