The Wages of Fear is Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 French thriller about four desperate men hired to drive trucks of nitroglycerin to an oil-well fire. Its suspense comes from the route’s physical dangers, but the job also exposes what poverty, pride, fear, and corporate power can make people risk. For a first viewing, seek a restored original French theatrical version; older US-release presentations were shortened, and editions differ in format and supplements.
What is The Wages of Fear about?
In the fictional village of Las Piedras, in an unspecified Latin American country, a US oil company needs an oil-well fire extinguished. The task requires transporting nitroglycerin over rough terrain, and the company recruits four men willing to make the perilous drive for money. The film follows Mario, Jo, Bimba, and Luigi as they set out in two trucks with the unstable cargo.

Yves Montand plays Mario, Charles Vanel plays Jo, Peter Van Eyck plays Bimba, and William Tubbs plays Bill O’Brien. Véra Clouzot plays Linda, and Folco Lulli plays Luigi. The film runs 152 minutes in Criterion’s listed edition and is presented in black and white. Its original French title is Le Salaire de la peur.
Why is the film a suspense landmark?
Danger that is concrete and cumulative
The journey’s obstacles make suspense physical: the trucks must back onto rotting planks over a mountain ledge; the men use nitroglycerin to clear a boulder; and one truck crosses spilled oil while a man clears a path. Each problem threatens to turn a routine movement into catastrophe. The film’s patience with these tasks makes the danger legible rather than abstract.

Fear changes the men
The job tests courage and cowardice, but it does not reduce the men to simple heroes or villains. Their choices are shaped by desperation, money, machismo, and their changing relationships with one another. Criterion’s essay quotes New York Times critic Bosley Crowther describing the tension this way: “You sit there waiting for the theater to explode.”
A political reading of the risk
Criterion’s essay interprets the story as a critique of corporate exploitation: workers with few options are made to gamble their lives for company profit. It also argues that the men’s pursuit of money and their machismo make them complicit in the system that exploits them. That is the essay’s political reading, not the only possible way to approach the film; it helps explain why the job’s economic terms matter as much as its technical hazards.

Is The Wages of Fear based on a true story?
No true-story basis is established by the available production sources. The film adapts Georges Arnaud’s 1950 novel of the same French title. Henri-Georges Clouzot wrote the screenplay with his brother Jean; Janus Films/Criterion press notes say the brothers spent ten months adapting it.
The story’s South American setting was represented through locations in southern France. The village was built in the Camargue, and the truck journey was filmed near Anduze in the Cévennes. Production began in May 1951, with the second half filmed in spring and summer 1952. The film premiered at Cannes in April 1953 and received the festival’s Grand Prix, also described by BFI as the Palme d’Or; these names refer to the same Cannes honor, not two separate awards.

Which version of The Wages of Fear should you watch?
For a first viewing, choose a restored version of the original French theatrical cut rather than assuming an older US-release presentation is complete. Criterion’s account says the US-distributed version was heavily trimmed, including material critical of American business interests exploiting workers in Latin America. BFI says its restored original French theatrical version restores four minutes missing from prior home-video releases. Critic Pierre Kast, quoted in Criterion’s essay, objected to cutting the film: “It is impossible to remove a single episode without distorting the ultimate significance of the film.”

Who made the film?
Clouzot directed and wrote the film with Jean Clouzot, adapting Arnaud’s novel. Armand Thirard was the cinematographer, and Georges Auric composed the score. Criterion highlights Thirard’s use of light and shadow in a black-and-white film that makes the landscape and the trucks part of the tension.
