“The Walking Dead: Cockroach Edition” is a 2014 Futurism article about the emerald cockroach wasp, Ampulex compressa, and its use of an American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, as a host for its offspring. The wasp’s sting does not simply switch the cockroach off: studies describe grooming followed by reduced spontaneous movement and escape behavior.
What the title refers to
Futurism published “The Walking Dead: Cockroach Edition” on April 30, 2014, framing the emerald cockroach wasp’s interaction with a cockroach as a kind of “zombie” behavior. The wasp is also known as the emerald jewel wasp. It uses a cockroach as a host for its developing offspring, rather than killing it immediately as prey to eat.
How the wasp changes the cockroach’s behavior
In a 2004 paper, G. Haspel and F. Libersat describe the wasp injecting venom into the cockroach’s central nervous system to induce behavioral changes. Their account cautions against calling the effect simple paralysis.
Grooming, then reduced movement
Frederic Libersat’s 2005 paper describes intense grooming after the wasp stings the cockroach’s head, followed by hypokinesia—a reduction in spontaneous movement. The 2023 study links venom exposure to reduced activity in cockroach brain circuits involved in locomotion and motor output. Together, these findings describe specific changes in behavior, not proof that the cockroach loses all movement or control of every action.

Why “paralyzed” is an oversimplification
The studies focus on behavioral effects such as walking and escape responses. That is different from establishing that the cockroach is wholly immobile. “Reduced movement” is the more precise description supported by these accounts.
How long does the developing wasp take to reach pupation?
Libersat’s 2005 paper reports about eight days from egg laying to pupation. Futurism’s 2014 article instead says the larvae hatch and mature “during the following month.” Those are different descriptions of the developmental interval; the paper’s figure is specifically egg laying to pupation, so the two should not be treated as interchangeable estimates.

What is known about the antimicrobial claim?
Futurism’s article says antimicrobial compounds prevent fungi, bacteria, and viruses from causing the cockroach host to rot. That claim is not independently supported by the research papers cited here, so it should be understood as a claim made in the 2014 article, not as a finding established by the behavioral studies described above.
