Why Mary and Maria share an English performer
Gunnarsdóttir performs both Mary and Maria in English; Shizuka Itō performs both in Japanese. The shared casting fits the premise Konami gives for the remake: James travels to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary, and encounters Maria, a woman eerily similar to her. Konami’s premise does not require treating the roles as the same character.

No. In a PlayStation Blog interview, Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto and Bloober Team creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart said the remake uses an all-new cast rather than the original game’s voices. They explained that creative and technical considerations informed the decision, including the need to adapt gameplay and dialogue. The creators also described changes to some dialogue and the placement of some events while aiming to retain the central characters’ emotional arcs. Read the interview on PlayStation Blog.
