Parijita Bastola was described in 2022 coverage as the first Nepali-American contestant or auditioner on the U.S. version of The Voice. At 17, the Severna Park, Maryland, singer earned a four-chair turn with Labrinth’s “Jealous,” chose John Legend as her coach, and reached the Top 8 in Season 22. Her stated ambition was to bring Nepali heritage into her music.
What “first Nepali-American contestant” means
Parade reported that Bastola described herself as the first Nepalese-American to audition on The Voice; the Baltimore Banner called her the first Nepali American contestant. The supported claim is specific: she was presented as the first Nepali-American contestant or auditioner on the U.S. show. It does not establish that she was the first Nepali-American performer on every U.S. singing competition.
Her Season 22 blind audition
In September 2022, Bastola was 17 and living in Severna Park, Maryland. She sang Labrinth’s “Jealous” for the blind auditions. Blake Shelton, John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Camila Cabello all turned their chairs.
When more than one coach turns, the singer chooses whom to join. Bastola picked John Legend’s Team Legend. NBC’s casting information describes the blind auditions as the stage where coaches select artists and artists choose among the coaches who turn.

Bastola made her cultural intention explicit during the audition. As Parade reported, she said, “I definitely would like to incorporate my culture into my singing and my music.” American Songwriter reported a fuller version: “I definitely like to incorporate my Nepalese heritage into my singing and my music.” The reports also describe her as drawn to R&B and soul.

After the audition, Bastola gave the coaches rudraksha beads from Nepal. Legend praised artists who connect their roots to a broader musical landscape: “The best artists are able to bring the music of their culture and of their roots into the wider global landscape of music.” The gesture and the exchange framed her heritage as part of her artistic point of view, not simply a biographical detail.
How far Bastola went on The Voice
Bastola advanced to the live shows and reached the Top 8. The Baltimore Banner reported on December 5, 2022, that she missed the original top four vote-getters. She then performed “Make You Feel My Love” in the Instant Save round, but did not advance. Her run therefore ended after the Top 8 stage, rather than with a place in the season’s final four.
What she said about the experience afterward
In a July 2024 interview with Annapolis Moms, Bastola called the show “like a summer camp on [steroids]” and reflected that it was an early test of her value as an artist. She credited her family’s support, discussed her first visit to Nepal, and named Norah Jones, Lianne La Havas, Yebba, James Blake, Adele, and Etta James among her influences. She also described intimate performance spaces as appealing, saying, “Every show is like a relationship with the audience.”
