The UEFA Champions League anthem was composed by Tony Britten in 1992, drawing inspiration from Handel’s Zadok the Priest. Its lyrics blend English, French and German. UEFA publishes the complete official text on its anthem page; the words are copyrighted, so they are not reproduced here.
What is the UEFA Champions League anthem?
It is the ceremonial music associated with the competition, played at the start of Champions League matches and in the opening and closing sequences of broadcasts, according to UEFA’s background page, published July 30, 2020. UEFA says it has no separate official title: it is the “UEFA Champions League anthem.”
Who wrote and performed it?
UEFA commissioned British composer Tony Britten in 1992 to write music in the style of George Frideric Handel. The iconic original recording features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields Chorus, as UEFA explains on its anthem background page.
Handel’s influence
The anthem takes inspiration from Handel’s Zadok the Priest; Handel did not compose the Champions League anthem. UEFA’s historical account says Zadok the Priest was first heard at the 1727 coronation of King George II, 265 years before Britten’s work.

What are the Champions League anthem lyrics?
The official lyrics combine English, French and German, with phrases and refrains that recur across the languages. UEFA credits the words to The Music Agency 1992 and provides the full text on its official anthem page. Was the anthem re-recorded?
Yes. In a brand identity announcement dated August 23, 2024, UEFA said Britten refined the orchestration and re-recorded the anthem with a hand-picked orchestra and the choir Tenebrae. UEFA described this as part of its updated brand identity. The announcement does not establish that this recording replaced the original in every broadcast or live ceremony.
