In The Voice Australia’s 2022 Battle round, Team Rita’s Lachie Gill won two successive decisions from coach Rita Ora: first against Theoni Marks in a duet, then against Robbie Dolan in a sing-off. Those wins sent the 24-year-old school teacher to the semifinals.
Gill’s first test: a duet with Theoni Marks
Marks had earned a Battle Pass after her blind audition and was paired with Gill. In rehearsal, Gill recognized Marks’s vocal range and worried he might not reach the heights she could. They performed Shawn Mendes’s “It’ll Be Ok,” after which Rita Ora chose Gill to advance. PerthNow reported the pairing, song and decision on 15 May 2022: PerthNow’s account of the Battle round.

Ora’s explanation focused on Gill’s ability to make the song feel convincing: “But Lachie has a natural gift where I believe every word that he’s saying.”
The sing-off against Robbie Dolan
Gill’s next challenge was not another duet. He faced jockey Robbie Dolan in a sing-off, with Ora choosing Clinton Kane’s “I Guess I’m in Love” for Gill. Ora praised both contestants before selecting Gill for the semifinals. In TV Blackbox’s next-day coverage, she is quoted as saying: “You were both spectacular up there, you both deserve to be on that stage.”

Why there were two decisions
| Stage | Opponent | Song | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle duet | Theoni Marks | “It’ll Be Ok” by Shawn Mendes | Ora selected Gill to advance. |
| Sing-off | Robbie Dolan | “I Guess I’m in Love” by Clinton Kane | Ora selected Gill for the semifinals. |
The distinction matters: Gill and Marks performed together in the Battle, while Gill and Dolan faced a separate sing-off decision. “Two powerhouses” refers to Marks and Dolan in the story’s framing; the coverage describes Marks as a powerhouse performer and Dolan as a favourite.

What the reports establish about Gill
PerthNow described Gill at the time as a 24-year-old school teacher. Although the original headline characterizes him as an ex-AFL player, the reviewed article text does not substantiate that biography, so it cannot establish details of his football career. The event itself is covered retrospectively in reports published in May 2022, rather than current reporting.
