Shia LaBeouf’s paper bag said, “I am not famous anymore.” He wore it at the February 2014 Berlin premiere of Nymphomaniac; the same phrase and prop were also reported at his Los Angeles performance, #IAMSORRY. The events document a public art project, but they do not establish one definitive explanation of what LaBeouf privately meant.
What did the paper bag say?
The wording recorded by contemporary coverage was “I am not famous anymore.” It was text on the bag, not a separately authenticated interview quote explaining LaBeouf’s intent. The Los Angeles Times reported the phrase at the Berlin premiere, as did The Guardian’s later account.
Where and when did he wear it?
Berlin premiere
In February 2014, LaBeouf attended the Berlin premiere of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac with the paper bag over his head. At the film’s news conference, he walked out after responding to a question with the line, “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.” Contemporary coverage reported both the walkout and the bag appearance. Los Angeles Times coverage
Los Angeles #IAMSORRY
The bag and slogan were also part of #IAMSORRY, a Los Angeles gallery performance. LaBeouf sat silently wearing the bag while visitors entered the room one at a time, according to the Los Angeles Times and TIME’s account of the exhibition. The Berlin appearance and the gallery performance were distinct events; the repeated phrase and prop connect them.

How does the plagiarism controversy fit?
The Berlin appearance came amid public controversy over plagiarism connected with LaBeouf’s short film HowardCantour.com. Contemporary reporting establishes that chronology and association, but it does not prove the controversy caused him to wear the bag or chose the slogan. The Los Angeles Times report places the episode in that context; chronology alone is not evidence of motive.
What did the statement mean?
The most supportable reading is that “I am not famous anymore” functioned as a public statement within a performance-art project. That is an interpretation of the phrase’s repeated use in Berlin and at #IAMSORRY, not a verified explanation of LaBeouf’s private intention. It should not be read literally as proof that he had ceased to be famous.

LaBeouf’s collaborators were artists Nastja Säde Rönkkö and Luke Turner. In a later Guardian interview, Turner discussed the work in the context of their broader collaboration. That framing helps explain why the events are more than an isolated celebrity appearance, but it does not settle the slogan’s meaning as a definitive confession or universally agreed message.
