The real event and the Hollywood movie Project X are not the same: the film helped inspire teenagers who amplified the gathering online.
What happened in Haren?
In 2012, Merthe Marije Weusthuis created a Facebook event for her sixteenth birthday and invited 78 people, according to Time’s 2025 account. The event was public rather than private, and its reach quickly grew beyond the original guest list.

Time reports that 17,000 people had RSVP’ed before the event page was deleted. A copycat event then circulated, explicitly invoking the 2012 Hollywood party movie Project X. Netflix’s official synopsis also says Dutch teenagers were inspired by the film.
By September 21, about 350,000 people had RSVP’ed, Time reports. That is an online response count, not evidence that 350,000 people traveled to Haren or attended. The event escalated into a riot. Time reports at least 36 people injured and dozens arrested; those are figures from its reporting, not an official final police tally established here.

How did a birthday invitation spread so widely?
The invitation’s public visibility allowed it to move beyond the people Weusthuis intended to invite. As the event circulated, the copycat listing and the association with Project X gave teenagers a recognizable party-film reference point. That connection helps explain the event’s online momentum, but it does not make the real gathering a reenactment of the movie.
The documentary’s Netflix synopsis says authorities did not expect a large turnout and had not arranged entertainment or provisions for a mass gathering. Time’s reporting also describes local officials discussing possible containment measures. These accounts describe decisions and expectations from different perspectives; they should not be treated as a settled, comprehensive official record of every response.

Is Project X based on the Haren party?
No. The 2012 film Project X is a fictional Hollywood movie, not a factual reconstruction of the Haren event. In the story told by Netflix’s documentary, the film influenced teenagers who helped amplify the real gathering. Trainwreck: The Real Project X is about the Haren event itself, rather than an adaptation of the fictional movie.
What is Trainwreck: The Real Project X?
Netflix lists Trainwreck: The Real Project X as a documentary. It was directed by Alex Wood and produced by RAW and BBH, according to Netflix’s title information. Netflix’s Media Center gives the U.S. release date as July 8, 2025, in its listing for the film.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 78 invitees | People invited to Weusthuis’s original Facebook event, as reported by Time in 2025. |
| 17,000 RSVPs | Reported by Time as the online RSVP count before the event page was deleted. |
| About 350,000 RSVPs | Reported by Time for September 21; this is not a confirmed attendance count. |
| At least 36 injured; dozens arrested | Figures reported by Time, not established here as official final totals. |
Time’s account is the source for all four figures. The available figures establish the scale of online attention and the reported consequences, but not a definitive count of how many people physically attended or an official final police total.

Why the birthday girl spoke about it years later
Weusthuis eventually chose to speak publicly about the event. In a statement quoted by Time, she wrote: “I am 28 now, and after all these years, I’ve finally decided to tell this story,” when sharing a trailer for the Netflix documentary on Instagram.
